Afternoon all, my B has a had a little MOT fail on its outer sills, or more specifically that one of them is held together with paint.

I have the replacement panels, but lack the welding skills to fit it, does anyone recommend anyone in the Wigan area that do it?

I'd quite like to get it sorted and back on the road before it takes root in the garage!

OP, try contacting the MGCC www.mgcc.co.uk - they'll have approved repairers in your area who know all about MGB sills and how to repair correctly.

Your issue is going to be if the outer sill is gone, then this is the last panel to rust. Your inner sill will be ratty, the membrane will be gone too, plus the castle section. You can have it patched, but to do it properly is a very big job.

What are your floors like?

As I said, they rust from the inside out, not outside in.

Floors are fine, attacked them from underneath to see how solid they were and nothing went through.

I know how badly they can go, I have just shifted another b where the floor and inner sill section had gone, as you say though the outers on that were fine...

I do have a bit of money I'm willing to put into the car though, so if it needs doing, it needs doing!

Sorry but I had to chuckle at your description 'a little MOT fail on its outer sills' oh the naivety !

If the inner sills and floors are OK, or at least salvageable, but the rest needs doing then you could well be looking at a bill of up to £4000 for a decent pro job.

Really? I do doubt that somewhat, The quote to sort various parts on the aforementioned b I've got rid of was nowhere near that and that was much, much worse.

Anyway, consider myself warned, but has anyone got any recommendations as to where to take it?

IIRC the average price for a full sill replacement is roughly £4-600 per side assuming the worst. If it is just the outer sill couldn't imagine it would be too bad but as others have mentioned the outer sill is usually the last to go.. Might be an idea to shine a light and have a look through the drainage holes on the castle section underneath to get a rough idea.. But you'd only be able to asses what needs doing when the the outer sill comes off.

Thanks, I'm budgeting for about that. If it costs less I've got other bits and pieces I can spend on!

Just a case of where I take it now.
