It was suggested to me that i could replace the Big End bearings - which I assume are the crank bearings on lower end - to help improve oil pressure. If this test doesn't work then the engine will have to be pulled and main bearings replaced.

Does anyone have any experience with replacing the crank, big end bearings with the engine in the car?

To be honest, you'd be better off pulling the engine, and rebuilding it on the bench.

A full, short-engine rebuild is only around 300 quid, and it beats laying on your back under the car trying to work out what's knackered...

Being kind of a dumb American, what is a quid? I recall from watching a lot of Monty Python when I was younger that they used to mention quid, but I never thought about how much money a quid was.
Anyway, thanks for the advice it does seem like a lot of work on my back, with the likelyhood that I'll get something wrong and then have a real problem. If I pull the engine I can then send to a re-builder without all the added cost of paying a mecahnic to pull it.
