Now the bodywork is being done, it is time to consider the colour.

I love the MGB GT in red but I have always thought the Tartan Red that it currently is to be too orange when in the sun (looks fine in the shade).

I'm not a stickler for originality and would prefer that it looks how I'd like it to look.

To that end, can you suggest a medium red colour like Tartan Red but one that doesn't look orange when in sunlight?

It doesn't have to be an MG colour either, as long as it is not too far away from Tartan Red.

I'd say damask red but then I would really... Perhaps a little dark?

I like damask red and had it been that colour I wouldn't have changed it but yes it is a little too dark.

My mum has a fully restored immaculate red Midget which was done in Porsche Guards Red for the exact same reasons as you've stated. Does look stunning with a good layer of wax.

ACtually, that's too orange for my liking.

The guards red doesn't look too bad from the pictures I can find on the net. Have you got a local body shop you could go and ask? Or maybe ask this question in either general gassing or bodywork forums?

Look at Austin Rover Flame Red from the late eighties. Used on MG Maestro and Montego models of the day.

Flame red is also a bit too orange.

Here's a good site for MG colours.

My neighbour has just taken delivery of a new Toyota GT86 in Lightning Red.

Can I suggest a visit to your local Toyota dealer and ask to see the same (don't trust dodgy internet photo colours). It has to be the nicest, deepest and non-orangey red I've seen in a long time.

Your quest may be over.

Gun Metal Gray, just one shade not 50 though.
Obviously not an original colour but having seen one it really suits it.
