I am posting for a friend who is an owner of a 1966 MGB with a gearbox (4 speed with overdrive) which has decided to break. As he does not speak English, I proposed to search around for help.

Any recommendations for finding a box in good condition or parts to possibly rebuild? Unfortunately I don't know what the damage in the box is, but I can find out if needed.

Thanks for the help

it would help him if you can say what is broken - is it the gearbox or the overdrive or just the gear lever or perhaps the clutch or . . .

does he want all the removal and installation work done or the gearbox will be removed by him and he'll get it to the rebuilder

here's one that's been recommended by others - http://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/

Thanks for the replies. I'll find out what is exactly broken and I'll get back on here asap.

It may be a 3 sync box not a more recent 4sync which goes on a 5 bearing engine. You'll have to check engine number 12xxxx
Plenty of second hand no O/ds around if he can put up with it. they will be cheaper than repair.

There are rather more MG types on the MG BBS. Post up a similar thread there if not already done so. Could be productive as many non-UK enthusiasts there.

Thanks for the tip.
I have registered on that site and will post also there. For the moment I haven't been able to contact the owner, but he told me that it was a 4 speed with overdrive.

A 66 car will have a 3 synchro box with a J type O/D, these are considerably more difficult to find second hand and in good order.

The later 4 sync boxes will not fit.
