Been keeping an eye on various sites including ebay "spares and repairs" cars. Spotted a "possible" and the ebay description by this seller should be used as a template for all "spares or repair" cars. Complete with a range of informative and helpful images of the car and it's engine which included this image :~

If only all vendors used this style and presentation for their "spares or repair" cars it would make things better for all concerned. This is the car :~

I actually first posted the above over on MG-Rover.org about a week ago. Then today one of my sons friends turns up with this :~

Again x-posted from MG-Rover.org :~

How's this for a coincidence?

One of my sons' Rover mad friends ( quite a few actually ) they've known since their schooldays bought this project MGF VVC today. The second car this young owner has ever bought. His very first car, a Rover 25 which he still has had the "They all do that" damaged Cylinder Head Gasket which he successfully replaced himself mostly unaided with guidance from my son. Admirable. This MGF also has evidence that the CHG will need replacing and the price paid reflects that ~ still a bargain. Has MoT and he taxed it on-line today. He's looking forward to doing that gasket renewal. Good lad ~ here's the car I photographed earlier. That's the owner on the left :~

All things considered including price paid, this shows there's some real bargain opportunities out there if you are patient.

That car pictured looks good given he can do the work himself. I'm not that handy.

I've just been offered a red MGF 2001 which I'm going to look at on Saturday. Not usually my thing but it's had a recent HG replacement, disc + pads and mot. Red, 70k and the guy just wants rid. He's mentioned £500 but I'm hoping to get it for £400. wink

If it's dog rough I'm not interested but apparently it's clean. I'll see on Saturday. I was going to clean it up and sell it on but I may be tempted to sell my E46 coupe and run the MGF for a bit. I like cheap! wink

Hi Marky... great little cars and they're lots of good fun for little money. An easy fix for anyone who is not afraid to pickup a spanner. Good luck if you go for it.

The lads have since replaced the cylinder head gasket on the VVC engine in this tidy car my son's friend bought. He got a bargain as the previous owner was leaving the country and needed a quick sale. I started a thread on the work they did with lots of illustrations over on MG-Rover.org here if you care to look :~

http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=500074

I have since driven the car a good few miles and the lads have done a good job. I was mindful that the cooling system on the mid-engine MGF/TF can be tricky to fill and bleed properly. Even pro-workshops have been known to get that wrong with expensive results. I kept my eye on the temperature gauge throughout the run and it never moved from the correct reading once the engine had warmed up.

Having tried the car, I'm more keen for something similar and will keep my eye open for a suitable "they all do that" project ~ when this cold weather pushes off and spring is sprung .. wink

By the way, they do NOT all do that. Two new MGs and Rovers bought by me still don't ten years and more on ... ones that do can be bought for little money and are usually an easy fix. Every cloud has a ... etc .. wink

Great thread that John.

Don't want to focus on it or anything wink but three score years and ten! Glad to see you still have petrol in your veins. Long may it continue. thumbup

Yep, you'll be able to bag a better bargain than me given the fact you're a dab hand at the HG. Good luck finding a suitable little project.

Some folks are already middle aged in their teens. For me, age is a merely a state of mind.
