After making my wife sell her Sienna Gold MGF last year to get something 'pratical' (which started as an A3 Derv, then changed to a VW Beetle) she soon got bored so it was decided she didn't actually need 'practical'

We decided to have a look at the MK3 MR2, and after looking at a couple of cars we weren't overly impressed with them, plus they aren't without their issues (like the MG HG issue)

So today we bought another MG. The car is a 04/54 in black, only the 1.6 engine, but she is happy with the power. Has a hardtop and pretty tidy overall except a few small marks and needing new badges.

She seems happy with it and I just hope we're not going to have any huge issues.... Time will tell I suppose!!

Having the car into work to check the brakes as they seem a bit unresponsive.

OP Did you resolve the braking problems with this car?

My son has just bought an identical looking car in the lovely pearl black but has complained about a lack of braking force. The discs and pads look good but I'm not sure how old they are, my first thought is to replace them but I am wondering if it is worth upgrading at the same time.

Yes we fitted new discs and pads all round and new brake fluid and it was sorted.

Been a great car, every time I drive it I enjoy it and would love one myself with a bit more power and some handling tweaks!!

I sounds like I just need to give the brakes a general service then. Cheers

Most manufacturers recommend regular renewal of Brake fluid for obvious reasons. Many users and owners, correction, too many have the mindset if it aint broke, why fix it. I'd bet a few quid that stuff in the hydraulics is the same as it left the factory with, or very old and degraded. More caring users and owners assume such renewals are always carried out during regular services and anyway, the car has an FSH [ full service history ].

This fluid looks OK Guv so why change it ? ..Yeah, looks OK ... carry on.

Never happens did someone say ~ been there and been charged for a fluid renewal which was NOT done.

I know from personal experience that an FSH is a NOT guarantee of a job well done, or even done at all.

Suggest any owner who thinks their brakes are not as good as they should be, first check the condition of the Brake Fluid in the Fluid Reservoir. If it is not clear and clean... nuff sed. Change it anyway. Same with the Clutch Fluid reservoir if the car has a Hydraulic clutch release system.

Can make all the difference and any half decent DIYer can change Hydraulic fluids and rebleed the systems.

Good point John, my VX220 improved with a fluid change and when coupled with a set of mintex 1144 pads was transformed. It sounds like a refresh of all parts is all he needs to do yes

another possibility is that a previous owner has fitted high performance, (i.e. high temperature) brake pads. These need to be warmed up before they have much bite. Best to use a standard compound for normal road use.

Good point W M. Many moons ago, I bought a Rover 220 TomCat Turbo where the previous owner had sensibly and expensively upgraded the brakes including stainless pipe lines. Quality slotted discs and highly regarded known brand pads all round. Those brakes were useless under normal use. Would pin the car down from silly speeds superbly! The previous owner was disqualified for six months for doing twice the NSL on the M3.... Massive fine too! Think he drives a Micra now poor sod ... hehe

Yes, have a look at those pads.

I fitted OE MG-R pads to my Tomcat and hey, good brakes again.

I fancy one of these as my next car, not sure about insurance though.

We just bought a 1996 MGF VVC.

I'm 47, SWMBO has just had A Significant Birthday, ahem...

Anyway, £120 a year for insurance.

We bought this.

as the brake fluid has been covered and brake pads (unless they were old and/or little used)

another thing that is often forgotten about with braking is tyres

some tyres can have loads of tread on them but be old and/or little used - the correct tyres with 3mm plus of tread that are not many years old and/or little used will help with braking

Fs are very tyre dependant too, you must get the correct tyres to get the best performance
