Depends really on whether you want performance or economy (and that's an issue as everybody seems to get different mileage). Mine's a diesel. Bought 3 years ago with 84k on it, now has 136k and still going strong (some might say still running in). I've had a new clutch assembly during that time, not cheap, but then I guess it's the same for most cars these days. Clutch is a problem though, judging by comments on the various make specific forums (search on MG/Rover Forums for good info on buying a diesel ZT). Cam chain so no problems regarding belts. BMW engine was designed for north/south instalation but is east west in MG so some parts are difficult to access eg alternator and thermostat. Some people have installed an in hose one rather than replace the existing one. Engine goes back to the 90s I believe so not as quick as newer diesels but is a good mileage muncher.
Apart from that, the ZT is a great car, plenty of threads on here backing that up. Handles well, comfy on a long journey (seats are amongst the most comfortable I've ever sat in....Southampton to Morzine, France via Dover with no back ache).
I've had no trouble with spares via my local garage and as said , loads of advice on various forums.
