The bumpers on my '71 b could do with a re-chrome but I don't want to go to the expense if they have already been replaced with repro parts, I may as well just buy some new repros. Do originals have any identifying features? And can anybody recommend or otherwise any suppliers of replacement bumpers?

Cheers

only worry about shiny parts after the car has been fully serviced, maintained and repaired and regularly driven for about a year and the car is running very well and not like the average slow, sloppy and unreliable classics you normally about

otherwise the money spent on the shiny bits might be more needed for other bits

OP doesn't know if his are already repro, not that it matters unless he wants to admit to being a wealthy student (loads of them about even without bank of mummy and daddy)

Adam, unless you have very good photos of them that you can post up here for others to judge the only way to tell is to compare them to originals, repro ones can be wrong shape and tend to have sharp edges, litterally sometimes

but as I've put I'd imagine you've other stuff on the car that takes priority for the money you'd spend

for chrome you don't want to over polish or use too abrassive polish, or you'll weaear through, standard car polish should bring chrome up well then I've seen it said that WD40 keeps them looking good - if so then one of the few things that WD40 is good for along with water dispersal - for penertrating/refleasing fluid you want something like PluGas

Try Coke it eats any small rust spots and the chrome comes up a treat.

Its far beyond rust spots, there are areas of peeling chrome up to 3" diameter which makes me suspect they are already poor quality replacements, they do fit relatively well though and are fairly thick. I'll probably replace them as the cost of rechroming is quite high comparably.

Cheers

Adam, if cost is the issue keep running the old girl with the current bumpers. Don't worry about a bit of patina'd character; just enjoy the old girl and keep the spare cash as an emergency running fund.

If you can't live with the rust get your's re-chromed as the re-chroming will much better quality than new repro's. Post a message on the mgcc.co.uk forum, there are plenty of guys who'll recommend the 'right' place to have bumpers re-chromed properly. You could of course go mid-way and save some money at the same time by buying a good pair of second hand units. Again MGCC & MGOC would be a good starting point by placing a wanted ad; there are plenty of bumpers to be found/sat in garages.

A good tip with second hand bumpers is, as previously mentioned, coca-cola and/or white vinegar both applied with kitchen aluminium foil; these work a treat, are non-abrasive and are cheap as chips. Good luck thumbup

Cheers for the advice. Mechanically the car is great now, I've done a full engine rebuild and more in the past 12 months, and with it being an older heritage shell the bumpers would be the finishing touch, just didn't want to go wasting money!
