Hello all,

this is my first time in the Mg section, and i need your help if possible.

today i bought my first ZS 180.

now when i test drove it at the dealers everything seemed fine, all the papers in good nick, full service history etc, belts and waterpump done about 3 years ago.

we got back to the dealership and i noticed that the the coolant was pissing out the bottom of the car. it seemed to be coming out the top pipe on the expansion tank. but it settled and the water level in the expension tank dissappeared then increased again. before finally levelling out.

i guess the feeling is i should of walked away and not bought it. but for some reason i did. i hope i dont regret it.

anyway driving it back on the motorway, the coolant light on the dash came on, so i kept an eye on the temp, which stayed were it should be. then after about 20 miles the light went off. then a little further up the road the light came on again. i had probably done about 60 miles on the motorway now. the temp gauge kept fluctuating throughout, but not by much and sometimes it would go down.

all of a sudden the tmep gauge shot up! to hot. so i stuck the heater on full blast to bring the temp down, which it seemed to do. the coolant light was still being intermittent.

i ended up crawling home at 50mph, with the temp gauge going up slightly from time to time, but completely unexpectedly.

anyway i am home now and there seems to be very little coolant left in the car.

any advice please? i have just bought the car so a little dissappoited.

That was not a good sign - can't understand why you didn't leave it with the dealer to sort out, unless it was a real steal!

Hopefully all you have is a split hose or a loose circlip - and that will be an easy fix.

However, running with low coolant will do serious/expensive damage so get it sorted soonest.

Cooling systems operate at a higher pressure than atmospheric. That allows the coolant to reach higher temperatures without boiling.

Simple things first. Coolant expansion bottle cap. If old it could be worn allowing essential normal operating pressure to escape leading to boiling at atmospheric pressure.

A leak anywhere in the cooling system will have the same effect if it does not allow the system to reach normal operating pressure.

You need to get the car back to the dealer and get them to sort it in case it is something more serious.
