Turbocharged Midget
Discussion
OK all done bar exhaust.
Have a strange problem dont know if anyone has any ideas
Firstly
OK car runs correctly without plenum chamber, revs fine etc.
When plenum chamber is on, it ticks over ok but almost as soon as I press the throttle it trys to kill the engine as if there was no fuel or air.
Only 2 ideas I can come up with
first turbo is nacked
second no back pressure from exhust is the problem
The turbo will spool up if I keep trying to blip the accelerator.
Any ideas people
Forgot to say its a standard A series engine with the turbo from a MG Metro

OK just got back from fitting the exhaust.
Its quick, im impressed at the amount of torque thats now created.
Havnt fitted a oil cooler, dont think im going to need it, the kenlow does me fine.
Ive a strange noise that im fairly sure is the turbine hitting the case as it spools up. Ill drive it for a bit and see if it trims its self down, if not I have another turbo to change it with.
But for such a quick conversion id recommend it. The awkward bit was making the first part of the exhaust to curve out to underneath the car but thats now done.
Edited to say I think the turbo has just quit, noise has stopped (got quiter then stopped) and so has the scaring my pants of acceleration. So Tommorrow ill fit the other turbo if its still the same after ive gone out for a spin at dinner. The reason im sure the turbine has given way is the 1, lack of whistle. 2, lack of being so scared that I dont think the brakes will stop me (well only that scared twice chaseing some cars.)
Oh and yes a definate while the turbo was running, mechanic friend drove it past the exhaust place that fitted the one I made all of them where outside waving him on as it screamed down the road

Well going to run the car in a bit should be back around 2 and if the turbo doesnt kick in ill spend the couple of hours fitting the other one.
I did have a feeling that the turbo wasnt perfect as compared to this other one it was stiffer to turn and would get stiffer and lighter again (when I say stiff I could still turn with one finger) but that kind of told me something wasnt perfectly straight.

Liteweight, hows your car going, have you finished doing the body work yet?
Just to let you know the turbo is still running fine on mine, and the engine is still bog standard.
You will find on the web site that there is a new turbo car, this one is a healy sprite with a 1380cc engine.
If you still fancy going this route im more than happy to help where I can. The car still appears as reliable as before, if anything perhaps starts a little easier but that might just be the time spent getting the carb/disy about right (Still need to get it to a rolling road to get the most out of it)
