Has anyone built or raced/run a FIA MGB. If possible I'd like some advice as I'm seriouisly thinking of building one.

I know a guy who I used to race with has one in the classifieds. Its 36K though surely its possible to build one for less? I guess it depends on whether you can find a base car at the right price pre 66 mgb's are no longer cheap and they all seem to have been rebuilt.

+1 though i'm not laughing, seriously, it's cheaper to buy one complete and save yourself a pile of time into the bargain. and remember, there are FIA cars...and there are real FIA cars. if buying complete make sure it's done properly.

Rather tidy. No bids yet, maybe starting bid a bit high? smile

Seen it, its on their web site at about 29k. Looks nice and I know its a racer but doesn't look too nice in the foot well/toebox area.

my mate used to race he said it was like setting light to a load of money each weekend and said the way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a larger fortune

it's like buying and running any old (classic) car only multiplied for a racing factor - plus sometimes people get hurt but that's the thrill of it (unless it still hurts or the pains reoccur, many years later)

Yep used to race in the healey championship so know all about setting fire to your wages. Plan was though to do a few sexy races each season rather than trudging up and down the motorway every other weekend. I thought this may limit wear and tear and also keep it pretty fun.

was just talking to my neighbour his mate (different one to mine) used to (still does?) race MGAs and shared a BGT V8, which he ran into a wall backwards at 70mph at Silverstone so my neighbour told me

we were saying today how he's not been the same since

I think he said he was at Donnington today with his Jag D-type replica, my neighbour's been his pit crew for very many years now, always used to race in the Thoroughbreds (something?)

he used to win his class with the MGAs and get plastic trophies, I remember my neighbour going down to Southampton to collect 3 or 5 I think 3 bearing B engines (hazy now on details) so that he could have one or some for his racing and sell the others - I had a BGT at the time and thought that cost a lot to keep on the road - this chap is nicely comfortably off though

IIRC eventually they could race 5 bearing engine because they'd bust most of the spare 3 bearing

funny business racing, what's allowed and what's not

The white FIA MGB on ebay isn't the nicest build and I think you will struggle to get an HTP on that car because there are so many things wrong with it.

The red MG Motorsport car isn't bad value when you consider that MG Motorsport are now charging 40K for a new one.

If you know what you are doing and you have the ability and facilities to assemble the car yourself but outsource the engine, gearbox and axle build as well as all the fabrication and spraying then you won't see much change, if any, out of 30k if you want to build a front running car. Obviously the more you can do yourself the more money you will save.

I have an FIA car that is for sale although I haven't advertised it yet. It qualified on pole for the first HRDC race of the season at Castle Combe ahead of the main quick boys. I have some onboard footage of the race here:

Hi thanks for the replies. I'm able to do all panel work and paint the shell my self, I used to rebuild mark 2 jags for a living when I left school. Building the engine and box is also a bit of a no brainer. Pete burgess isn't too far away and I could assemble the bits my self although from previous experience saving the few hundred he charges for building it is out weighed by the peace of mind of having him do the job. Gear box and diff aren't an issue as I've done these at home for my frogeye racer and an MGB won't be much different.
