Gentleman - a little help if possible.

I am looking for a good condition (ie. restored etc) MGC GT . . . I am more a polisher than a spanner wielder!

Am new to the MG world - so could do with a few bits of help!

I have had Caterham's for 19 years (currently an HPC for 15 years, which has been great fun) - but my wife is not keen on longer trips in it and will not drive it at all frown

Got to the point where it sits in the garage and is not getting any use.

So . . . time for a change. Something a little less full on but with some good grunt smile

Its a question of where to start - there are several with dealers.

Looking for one with a sunroof (wife's request!) Overdrive and a re- build history. Budget is in the £16k region. (would also consider a V8 - but not a conversion)

Anyone know of a car that is available?

Regards

Gentlemen

Thanks for the couple of replies and messages.

Things have moved a little faster than I anticipated . . .

I have found one about 10 miles from me and have this afternoon agreed to purchase it smile

Its an older restoration, but with full detail history and an interesting engine. Fits budget wise as well

Wife drove it as well . . . and liked it PHEW!

Collecting it next Thursday. Will need a few bits sorting - first being a change to a 12v from 2 x 6Vs - any tips on that?

Any local MG'ers? Do say hello!

Next is item is to sell the Caterham . . .

I really wouldn't bother. My C runs on a single 12v, it leaves the second space free for a toolbox/spare battery/spare parts, starts the car fine, works perfectly and reduces weight. It's one of those areas of originality that in all but a concourse car is a waste of time IMO.

Ah . . . Valid point!! Its been a long week!

Am in Leamington Spa . . .

As for the battery - current 2 x 6V's are on their last legs - so makes sense to change to 1 x 12V and yes - use the spare hole as a tool store.

Piccies to follow when its actually mine!

Meanwhile - here is a pic of my Caterham by way of recompense!

Welcome to the merry bad of C owners.

Like I said send details to Ginny so they can register her. Then plenty of sites for MG's to get info etc.
A few MGC suppliers of bit n bobs around.
Oli and I can point you in the right direction. MGLive day coming up in July at Silverstone.

if my network was better I'd download couple of pic's.

Pick the car up yesterday afternoon smile

Overall very pleased smile

What is the consensus on tyre pressure? Car is running new Mich 175's (The Caterham runs at 14 psi - me thinks this critter will be a little different!).

Do feel the braking could be a little stronger. Its just had a new master cylinder - I would like a bit more 'bite' to them. Any comments on Mintex 1144 or Green Stuff (which I gather are a bit like marmite in folks differing opinions . . . )

At the mo its just getting a clean and a polish, just to get acquainted with what I have bought - no horrors found so far! Seems to have a bit of an oil weep from near the water pump, which will need an investigation at some point.

Tyre pressures should be nearer 30psi and if you aren't racing then go for standard pads, 1144s need heat in them before they work, can't comment on EBC as I've never used them but apparently they are like Marmite. Does it have a servo fitted, if not you might want to fit one to save your right leg.

I use yellow stuff pads on the standard callipers for both track and road , clean pads, the Willwood callipers and hawk blue pads are great but very dirty on alloys.
No MGC braking system feels good but it will work very well if needed. Get braided hoses fitted if you don't have. maybe worth flushing the system with new brake fluid as well

Yup - car does have a servo on and all looks in good condition inc pipes.

By preference, I like a high, hard brake pedal - this has a lot softer feel to it and a lot more travel which I am not so keen on. Is the pedal height adjustable? Would like some better bite as well. System, I am told, was flushed when the new master cly went on. Not got braided hoses - so thats an alt to make.

Maybe its me, coming from a 520kg Caterham with AP 4 pots on the front . . .

Just my initial reaction is one of ooo - thats not so nice.

On another matter - Overdrive - car has it and it seems to work fine ok. Never having had one before, is it best to de clutch when slotting it in and out?

Tyres were at 36 rear and 34 front . . . now set to 30 all around - which seems far more sensible!

Front pressures 2 psi higher than rear, you can remove the servo if you have leg muscles to gibe you a hard pedal , you will get used to pedal,

Been out and tried with the tyre pressures (30 Rear and 32 front). Yup far nicer smile Really not keen on the brakes - that needs attention asap to get some feel in to them.

Mind you have also proved to myself that it sure as hell does not grip as well as the Cat7 with CR500s - was definitely a bit of a 'clench' moment . . . !

Just for fun I went out with the 7 over the same route just now . . . I have the feeling I am going to be looking to add a bit more umph to the MGC . . . It has an Oselli built, fast road unit (so all the paperwork history says) - twin SU's as usual. Worth going the 3 carb route? Don't really want the expense of a Weber set up. May be an extra carb and a freer flow manifold and exhaust without going mental on the ££££'s?

Wrt brakes, I can recommend the Mintex 1144's. If properly bed in, they work perfectly from cold.

I'm using red stuff in standard calipers with standard rear brakes and the servo fitted.

Got to say it stops well even on modern tyres and used on PH hoons from time to time. I haven't managed to get the brakes to fade yet and they have been seriously hot, the previous pads (OE Asbestos which are a lot less prone to fade than the modern standard pads) were fading heavily when pressing on. It ruined the drive.

Ok so your getting there!!
The best manifold is maniflow tubular with twin exhausts single box £870. Three carbs or two 2" on a american spec inlet. Oli is going the three carb route. Vic Young is a 2" fan he has all the right bits. Gooogle vic n MGC or pm me I'll give you his number.
There is another injection car coming soon with Jenvey's from DAMICO race engines no price yet but will be a kit if required and far cheaper than mine.
If you want hard brakes then remove the servo for a bit and see if you like that feel.
What tyres and rims are you using, once again it will make a difference, you can get a bit of neg camber by removing the shim's on the top wishbone but get the geo set up after.
