Just had my MGB delivered and firstly tried to work out what keys do what.
Also took some photos that I need a hand with.
What's this?
Is a pull switch with electrical contacts on the back and no wires attached.
What are these 2 wires supposed to be for?
And I assume there is a wire missing off this (something to do with the fuel system) as there is a contact attached but no wire.
Cheers

that's an extra or replacement switch someone has fitted possible for something that needs a pilot light, fog, spot light, rear windscren heater
do yourself a big favour, buy yourself a paper copy of the factory Driver's Handbook (this is not a workshop manual) that would have come with the car when it was new and tell you all about the (factory fitted) controls, servicing schedules and work, wiring diagrams and bulbs and fuses
if you'd bought it before you'd know much of this already (I suggest buying the Driver's Hanbook before even looking for a car as it's that full of information)

fuel gauge should have wire to voltage stabiliser

just remembered - you should have a copy of the Driver's Handbook I remember seeing a copy (yellow/green cover) next to the dog in the boot
take very careful note of the scheduled 36,000 mile service as I suggest you carry this out, in stages if required, as soon as possible as this service will cover, spot and prevent the further work you may need to do

Bin the switch it's junk.
Ignore the wire for now it's not causing a problem.
The fuel "thing" is your fuel pump, doesn't look to have anything missing the second wire (earth) is on the other side of the panel where the fuel connectors are and if it works leave it alone.
It is missing the protective cover however (both) it should have a bakelite round cover protecting the points and a metal box cover protecting the head of the pump. So be very careful with stuff in the boot.

i have read the handbook and looked at the service. that will help to prevent future issues and turn stuff up as you go along - regular use of the car though will help the most so get into that as sooon as you canon top of the 36,000 miles service I suggest
change gearbox and back axle oils
change brake and clutch fluids
change coolant and clean inside and out and flush and back flush radiator and heater matrix and include clean, drain, flush and back flush of engine block too check/change expansion tank pressure cap
check/change fan belt
change dissy cap, rotor arm and HT leads (buy good quality parts and items) - http://www.distributordoctor.com/rotor_arms.html
as you've found don’t assume the parts and components already fitted to the car are necessarily the original or correct type or that they’re fitted correctly ot that all new parts are made well
As new rubber cooling hoses tend to be poor quality now this is also a good chance to change them to silicone and rounded-edge clips - http://www.classicsiliconehoses.com/
of course having the braking system in good condition is the most important thing but also check tyres, if they're old and/or not been used much then regardless of tread depth left consider changing for new
always have the battery(ies) and all its connections leads and connections, other earth leads and all their connections - clean, secure and protected and in good condition as this will obviously help with starting the car and running the electrical items but it will also help with problem solving many items whereas a battery and/or connections in poor condition will create problems in itself and not help with other problems
John Twist gives great, clear advice on serving and repairs in his videos – http://www.youtube.com/user/Universitymotorsltd#g/...
you can also get an excellent DVD that includes original Parts Catalogues, Parts Fiches, Workshop Manuals and owners Handbooks to have in electronic format, not as convenient as paper copies but a lot more information – http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-HMCC3007DVD

There's no wires missing, the round threaded bit (if that's what you mean is just a means to attach the terminal blade. There should be a bit of plastic tube slid over it to stop anything metal making contact and shorting it out. Get a new cover ASAP or even a replacement pump. MGOC club do an electronic version which does away with the crappy points.Cheers

I've found the MGOC parts shop about the best value and they do just about everything you need for the car.
