Can't believe how cheap these are - somthing to do with headgasket issues on the K series engine?

Anyway, what engine to choose for reliability, good version v bad versions, what to look for and what's the mid engine installation like for working access. Not too concerned about performance or handling- is the 1.6 good enough? and believe there's two suspension options - which to go for?

Anything else I need to know, and no Mrs JS does not want an MX 5 instead smile

Over to you Chaps thumbup

Only the F had Hydragas suspension, the TF is on normal coils. Which is the most reliable? All will get HGF at some point, so whichever has been properly repaired will be the most reliable really!! I'd go for a 160 VVC if you could, it's an extremely sweet engine which suits the car perfectly and you get 4-pot AP Racing brakes up front, but even the 1.6 is a fun little lump. Apart from the usual used car checks like finding out if the cambelt was done, just make sure the radiator and underfloor coolant pipes are okay, if the underfloor pipes start leaking you'll lose all the coolant in no time and she'll then overheat. If you need them, stainless replacement pipes are £65 plus P&P and not too hard to fit.

Also, when you get one the first thing to replace is the coolant expansion tank cap. They're £5 and should be replaced every couple of years. There's a wee valve in them which eventually goes faulty. A low level coolant alarm (£70ish IIRC) is a good investment if HGF is a big worry of yours as it'll warn if the coolant level starts dropping.

Other than that just buy, run it on decent tyres and enjoy! biggrin
