got into the car last night and there seemed to be a distinct lack of brakes!
hardly any feel in the pedal,it go's all the way down to the floor.very little breaking achieved but eventually does stop the car.checked hose to the servo and the obvious fluid level and they seem ok.the day before it drove fine???
due to it having a sound floor, the fred flintstone approach to stopping it is not on the cards....

any suggestions welcome!smile

thoughts off the top of my head:

if it's that bad obviously don't use the car

when you say you checked the servo hose do you mean for air leaks and security of fixing or for fluid leak

what did the bake fluid in the reservoir look like in constancy and colour

when was your brake fluid last changed?

have you checked the flexi- hoses, front calipers, rear cylinders and shoes

how does the handbrake feel

Bled/ renewed the fluid about 4 months ago, brakes were fine up untill they went a couple of nights ago.handbrake also good.checked for leakes on the flexi hoses also and all is well.at a bit of a loss with it.thinking maybe a seal in servo?

yes I did wonder if you meant it seems like lack of servo for feel but that won't account for lack of pedal feel youd just be pushing the pedal harder than youre used to if it was just lack of servo assistance

check all your bleed nipples and perhaps could there be air still in the system

Start the engine with your foot on the brake, if the servo is working the brake pedal will move under your foot pressure.

after doing a bit of research as you do,it would point towards a seal in the master cylinder? would this sound right?

seals do go and can be replaced

don't know about Bs but with Midgets some say to replace seals other say better now to replace master cylinder as seal replacements now can be short lived or unsucessful

anything newly made that contains rubber can be suspect

don't assume it's seals without checking I'd think you should see evidence of failure by pulling back boots and covers, have someone pump the brakes if required
