Hi everyone.

I have got a 1972 mgb gt and an 1980 mgb gt(im going to get shot of 1980 b) and my question is as follows:

Can I do a straight engine swap (without the gearbox) and put the 1980's B in the 1972's? Because the 72's engine has lost a lot of power and is fading away, were as the 80's engine was a reconditioned engine that was installed in the mid 90's and it is in very good condition. Will it slip straight in and what about gear ratio's???

cheers guys

Yes it will but the engine mounts are different. You will need to address this before fitting.

The distributor is different as well as the carbs and the thermostat housing. None of which is too much of a challenge but as has been mentioned the front mounts are different but I don't remember if the front plate is the same on both engines, probably is. Gear ratios are gearbox related not engine.

Front plate is different.

Distributor doesn't matter use the RB one, ditto carbs (the RB carbs are better with minor work too) the thermostat housing swaps straight over.

Thanks for the info guys that's a great help.

Looking forward to getting stuck into this, I have been told an engine removal can be done in 4 hours but I dont think I will time myself for the first attempt! haha
