Hello All,

Looking to tap into the bottemless pit of knowledge that is PH. I am taking a colleague to view a MG ZR 120 at the weekend, the car in question is one of the later ones with relatively low mileage.
I have had a Google and a search on PH read but can't seem to find much other than the spoilers and body kits can come loose.
Has anyone had any issues or niggles with their ZR's over the years? Is there anything specific to be looking for other than the usual checks? I am aware of the "YesItsARover, it's head gasket will melt children's faces off every time you open the door" bits.

Cheers,
Steve

The usual much talked about (and blown out of proportion) issue is head gasket failure is what everyone rants on about, check for mayo on the oil filler cap and traces of oil in the header tank. Full service history is a big big plus point.
They are reliable and economical too.
Look for rust on the underside, the sills and wheelarches.
mg-rover.org is good.
I owned one which i drove for 2 years and 21,000 miles. I gave it to my daughter and it's still running fine, as it always has done save for an idle control valve.
I change the oil every 5 or 6 months (6,000 miles)
They are quite simple really so there are no major problems.
The 1.4 has not got much torque the 1.8 (120) is ok and the 1.8vvc (160) goes pretty well.

Oh wait! comments like Oh my gawd it's a Rover! and Why would you you want to buy that? were comments i soon got tired of, in fact that was the major problem with them, other peoples ignorance.
Remember Rover = st, they went bust they must be crap!!!
They are actually very good for what are! honest!
Buy carefully and have fun!

Steve,

Stegt4 has covered it nicely.

Get a nice one which has all the signs of being well cared for and you will be happy with it. Even if the "They all do that" scenario shows, no big deal and an easy cheap fix for any half decent DIYer. By the way, two we've had from new in 1993 and 2003 still in the family have yet to "Do that".. wink

Check all the things you'd check in any old used car. The youngest one is now at least seven years old remember. I prefer the pre-2004 facelift cars. Except for the MKII facelifted MGZS which is to my eyes one of the best looking ordinary production cars to ever leave a production line:~

Yes, be patient and find a nice one. They are exceptional value and not a bad place to be either.

Thanks chaps! My colleague is having second thoughts now anyway.
John, I used to have a mk1 smile mk2's rear ends let them down in my opinion, but loved the rest.

If it ever happened, I could get a head skimmed locally and do the rest myself.
