hey guys
im new to this part of the forum but hoping someone can help me out.
my uncle had an old MG, pretty sure its a BGT. he passed a year or so ago and left it to his daughter who has no interest in it and its just been sat on her drive since.
what im trying to find out is if there was an automatic gearbox option avaliable for these? it is a manual and i have prostectic legs and can only drive an automatic. id love to buy it off my cousin and restore it but its no use to me unless i can convert to auto.
iv seen a few automatic MG bgts for sale but is the engine different from a manual like the old minis wer or will an auto box fit straight to a manual engine (obviously needing a different subframe).

cheers

tony

IIRC, an autobox will fit onto the engine no problems, different propshaft needed but I think that's all. Through the MGOC or MGCC classifieds you may be able to do a swop. Good luck.

+1

also, can't remember if gearbox tunnel needs any modifications for auto-box, but it would be a straight forward changeover. as a note, you mention the car needs restoring? depending on by how meuch, it may be easier to go the heritage shell route and get british motor heritage in witney to add any mods needed at point of bodyshell build. see http://www.bmh-ltd.com/mgbshell.htm

If it's a 3 synchro car (unlikely as 3 synchro GTs are rare) then no you can't.

If it is a 4 synchro car which it almost certainly will be, 67 on model. Prop is exactly the same.

You need gearbox, bellhousing, gearselector, brake pedal, flex plate, torque converter, oil cooler?, kick down linkages.

Basically unless you can find a complete kit someone has pulled from an auto to convert to manual it's an expensive proposition, easy job though once you have the bits. Obviously no tunnel work needed as the shells are all the same.

Do bear in mind the top auto gear is straight drive, in other words the same as a standard 4 speed non overdrive. Not fantastic for cruising.

Oh and no subframe on an MGB, if your referring to gearbox crossmember it's the same from memory on the auto box. Very few parts to change.
