after scrubbing along some grass and rocks after being forced off of the road my overdrive isnt working. oil level is fine, wireing in the switch is fine. the wire from the switch is still going into the overdrive unit ( if that makes sense ) so im assuming it will be the earth some where ? but finding it hard to track the other wire. any body have any ideas ?

thanks

James do you know that power is getting to and from the gearlever switch and to the overdrive unit have you tested it with a bulb-tester or multi-meter

the unit might earth to the g/box body ??

I thought I'd given you a link to this site but I might not have

you could also ask on MG BBS and have a look at the John Twist videos for dismantling the o/d if required

more here - http://www.british-cars.org/mgb-technical-bbs/over...

a quick search and loads turn up just remember to discount stuff for North America (where most cars went) and that there are early and late overderive units

good luck

looks like the g/box might get another oil change !

if so get the oil hot(-ish) to drain, don't be tight replace it and have a look at the now old oil for condition and bits - there shouldn't be any as it's so fresh isn't it

and you know the plugs will come out easy, how to get at everything that servicing work you done is helping with this problem

take your time, don't cut corners, use the correct tools and replace and fixing that need to, clean, secure and protect all electrics and connections, double check all your work so you don't have to do it again

Sod's Law that after looking after the car things then start to go wrong

solved but not fixed.

the switch is broken for one thing and there is a loose conection at the gearbox. had it going for a while but it cut out again. going to get a new switch and then fix it. should be easy enough.

thanks

switch and connectors then, don't forget the wires, replace or make good

leave it out of overdrive then you're only missing 5th and no hugh drop from second to overdrive 3rd (=4th)
