Some friends have put a deposit down on an 02 1.8 MG-F.

I don't know much about these cars, are they a good purchase or not?

Looks a fun car, but are they safe / reliable?

Looking through Autotrader, they seem to have a good price for the year / mileage, but I was wondering what the day to day reliablility / running costs are?

Any help appreciated

Our first VVC did 160,000 miles without trouble, until a yoof ran into the back.

It's replacement is just as reliable. Annual service and MOT at a non-franchised garage costs ~£250. An average of 42 mpg is also very welcome.

2 of my mates bought them.

First mate - her's leaked a bit and needed some odds and sods done with rear brakes, but was otherwise sound. Sold a year later purely because she didn't use it as much as she should have and needed something more practical.

Second mate - he bought his on the cheap with HGF. Sorted out the engine for 250 quid and has a utterly reliable sound car. Still running well 3 years later, although he also doesn't use it as much as he should.

The only things I don't like about Fs is the seating position in particular, the naff plastic trim in general and the risk of HGF if it's not been dealt with properly before.

I've put 10,000 miles on mine in 8 weeks.

Has been faultless so far.

'Entertaining' in the wet, but faultless.

Can be a good purchase if you get one that has been properly sorted out. Potential to empty your wallet fairly quickly as the K-Series HGF and Underfloor Cooling system is basically a joke in quality control. Front Sub-Frame is prone to rust intrusion (so Waxoyl required in numerous locations). I very much enjoyed mine for the 2yrs I had it, but I did spend out a fair bit on fixing problems, but to be fair mainly improvement modifications to get the car setup.

I think if I was going to do a roadster again, I would look at the original MX5 vs MGF/TF... just a thought?
