can anyone tell me if the diff in a midget is similar to that used in the A40 rear axle?

I think it is the same basic axle, maybe differing ratios though

Not sure entirely though, been nigh on forty years since I last saw an A40 axle…

Probably the same as Morris 1000 too.

the midget axle is the same in the frogeye, sprites, 1500, morris minor, austin a40 pretty much anything BL from around that time although over the time bits were added to the casing like on the 1500 there is an extra bracket for the hand brake mechanism as its different to the 1275. the only difference is the ratios of the final drive
