Just wondering if the MGF & MG TF engines are the same?

i.e

MGF 1.6 same as MG TF 1.6
MGF 1.8 same as MG TF 1.8
MGF 1.8 VVC same as MG TF 1.8 VVC

cheers,

yep the design is similar
but the attention to detail in the manufacturing is better the later the engine.
Locating dowels for head - alloy etc is of better and better quality
also same as rover 75 / land rover freelander ( better quality again )
new these engines are £1000 - which is the way if you want no trouble
an overheated engine is never a good bet- especially not one with liners

hope this helps

But as with all K-Series Engines they all suffered with HGF, problems with the underfloor cooling pipes clogging up and causing overheats. As already stated the later cars have the uprated head bolts, which is essential.

Just make sure you check out the paperwork if you're buying!

The TF135 engine uses different cams to the MGF 1.8, but is basically the same.
The TF160 VVC engine has unique (stronger) pistons and uses the MGF VVC head modified with a slightly better port design.
If you are swapping from an F engine to the later TF varient then its not a simple matter of plug and plug, particulary if you want to use the TF's ECU.
Swapping from a non-VVC 1.6 or 1.8 to a VVC varients ads further complications.

Thanks for all your replies.

If i swapped an engine, for example 1.8 VVC, over from an F to a TF and took the ECU with it would that eliminate the problems?

The MGF vvc was only 145bhp and the TF vvc 160bhp, except the F trophy engine which was 160, so you would be losing 15bhp with an F vvc, also the ecu from the F will not plug straight into the TF wiring so would have to altered to suit. so better to get a Tf engine and ecu.
