go on someone give me some clues on where to look on an s1 or s2. I seem to have been bitten by the aero8 bug and need to get one!

The number of S 2 versions is very low. Many of them went to the USA. The only available one is more expensive than some of the S 3 versions. Maybe you should concentrate on S 1 or S 3 models.

I really meant a buyers guuide. I have driven the series 3 and 4 and by golly they are fantastic................

What is a realistic price I could expect to get an S3 for ? I note that some of them seem to have been hanging around for a while, although two have just "disappeared" from the SGT website.

One of them was mine, let's just say that the price level was below what someone is trying to get for an S2. biggrin

Aeroman from your profile I see you have owned all the series of Aero 8. What is your personal opinion of the various series i.e. have they improved over the generations or just changed?
Which was your favorite ?

I started looking at a Series 1 but I am now beginning to think I should save a bit more and look for a Series 3 as I do much prefer the looks.

My series 3 is up for £46,995 A new series 4, the next step up is now over £70,000 as a basic car with the last price increase and spec'd up will come way over £75,000 if you have the Auto so Series 3's are great value at the moment.

Yes but lets not forget that series II cars are significantly rarer biggrin all the updates with the original lights ...

And although I am somewhat biased thumbup it will have some effect eventually I would think. I definitely wouldnt change my car for a series III, not even sure for a series IV, though would consider it - an Aeromax? Definitely cloud9

I have to be a bit circumspect mph, as otherwise I’ll be in trouble with some of the members here if I seem to criticise their p&j. biggrin

So here goes, the Series I was a very interesting new development for Morgan and it was really a race-specced car for the road. As Cereal says, the looks are hunkered-down ‘gangsta’ and the car is very pure, having been basically productionised by one man - Chris Lawrence.

Major minus points were in most cases the rather poor build quality, most of the issues were sorted out under warranty, and the cars coming on the market now should be reliable. Hoods have already been mentioned, but the car is under-braked (4-pot brakes), the headlights whilst distinctive (from the VW Beetle) are not adequate for the performance imho. The buying guide covers the other major issues.

Series II – a number of changes were made that to my mind improved the breed, new 6-pot brakes, different power-steering, altered rear-axle mounting (less shunt in the drive-train) and a myriad of other minor changes, but big news was a new hood that was much more water-proof; even if it does compromise the looks somewhat when down.

The big news though was the fact that the body tub was made nearly 6-inches wider and there was a new carbon-fibre bootlid to give more room in the boot. Initially, this was known in the works as the Federalised car, as this was the car that was developed for the Aero’s entry into the NA market and so air-bags, central-locking, etc, etc. Lastly, a different BMW engine with another 36 bhp (depending on which figures you believe!).

Build quality improved, but headlamps remain under-whelming. A distinctive Aero, but the Series I fans think that it has become middle-aged and gained weight (as we all seem to) and become flabby. No less a figure than ‘Jo-Bo’ Scheier does not agree with this assessment.

Series III – finally the lights and the front styling is ‘fixed’ with the Cooper S halogen units incorporated and now even with headlight washers! The many detail improvements continue and whilst some see this as a dilution of Lawrence’s concept, or at best a lack of focus, I find that the many changes make the car easier to use and I know which I would prefer to drive on a long journey.

Most pre-owned Aero’s will have had the gremlins sorted out by the first-owner(s), but whilst there are no really major mechanical issues with the engines or running gear, there can be electrical problems particularly as the cars become more complex (and older) and thus it is important that you have a full service history with the car.

My own choice, and I feel I can be dispassionate about this as I have sold my first three Aero’s, is that a Series III is well worth paying the extra for and although Series I/II’s have also dropped in value with the general market, Series III’s are the best value at the present moment as relatively speaking they have taken the biggest drop in value. getmecoat

Hmmm.... each to his own but I happen to like the old 'squint' as it is characterful. I suppose I may have liked the narrower seies 1 body if I could fit in it laugh

Thought your comments very fair.

My twopence worth as a long term +8 owner is that an S1 is more likely to appeal to a former trad owner; harsher feel, narrow cockpit, exposed hinges, old style door handles, water leaks.... etc

A later S3 or S4 will have more to attact a possible owner also looking at other top end sports cars.

Hi Philip

I think I might tend to agree with you on the S1 route for Plus 8 owners however I also think they might appeal more to other ex specialist Britsh Sports Car owners... I am particularly thinking of TVR for instance.

It's funny how people seem reluctant/unable to really place the series 2 or even group it with the series 1 when in actual fact it is virtually a series 3 with the old headlights (and IMHO thus retains some of the original look). It is pretty rare though

However our resident Guru Aeroman biggrin who by the end of April will have owned one of every type of Aero made, including an Aeromax cloud9 is pretty accurate in all he says above.

It is a shame his series 3 is sold (not for him naturally) as it was a superb example at a very competitve price due purely to Market conditions and the time of year, again IMHO.
