Posted the following in General Gassing, as it seems sort of quiet in here...

There seems to be a few of these in the hands of PHers. I'm very intrigued by the idea of ownership, and before I start hounding for test drives and so on - would anyone with one of these (or with first hand experience of one) like to give me an idea of what it's like to run and own one of these things? Before the comments regarding the headlights roll in - I like 'em. OK, they make the car look a bit like a simpleton on wheels, but I kinda like the effect.

I'd be looking at an S1 - something in or around the 30k mark. Any problems of note? Any disasters lurking for the unwary? How do they handle? Are they woefully, desperately hard to sell on? Anyone know of one on offer that's conspicuously good value?

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

Loach,
Glad to see your looking for an Aero 8....
especially a Mk1 Depending on the year of Mk1 there are a few simply sorted things to look out for:
Roof version - Original Gangsta Style or Esy Up of the later cars
Rear Driveshafts - Some of the original Mk1 cars need them tightened on the Hub end.
Side Door tops - These can often become lent out and may need the bracket in the door to be adjusted to re-align.

Other than that there is very little to have a problem with.

As for Handeling.. they are pretty damned good... they have been described in EVO reciently as simlar to what a large Caterham would be.

As for hard to sell on.... that's not the case... the demise of TVR in the UK has lead many a TVR owner come over to Morgan and the more the reputation of the Aero 8 gets around the more other marques owners are considering converting. Shifting a car with the right mods is no problem at all....If anything, prices are looking up.

Edited to add:

My other half is German and her parents come over regularly and love the Aero. With a BMW engine they are looking at purchasing one to take back to Germany as well.... Much nicer than a Z8 which is the closest BMW alternative. Weisman are close but a canoe factory away. lol

I've recently bougt an S1 about 3 weeks ago and I'm gutted that I didn't do it years ago.

It's an amazing car and surprised me beyond belief. I bought one cos I liked the look of them so it was a real bonus when I drove it and realised how very capable it is. Right up there amongst the big boys. Superb chassis, amazing torque. DO yourself a favour and stop thinking about it and go do it....You're wasting precious time.

Don't know if it will help but as others have said, they are wonderful cars and really get to the pure driving enjoyment that so many of us have been searching for in other cars (M3s, 911s, etc) thumbup

Thanks for responding, and sorry I haven't been back to check on this one for a while. Since my original post, the thread in General Gassing has yielded some useful info, and I've been off to test drive a car. I was told a few bits by my local dealer - what do you reckon to what he said?

a) He said that the front suspension is a weak point on the S1, and that some of the linkages tend to fail and can need replacing regularly
b) He said that the crank actuated steering pump tends to go, and is usually replaced with the newer electric system mounted in the left fender
c) The S1 hoods are a mixed batch of bad or worse compared to later designs

He also gave me a copy of the dealer blurb for the new S3, detailing what has been done to improve upon the car - if anyone wants me to post it here, let me know. From my own perspective, having sat now in an S1, S2 and S3, is that I like the cosiness of the S1 cockpit. Furthermore, I loved the car to drive (I tried a GTN-spec S1 with sports exhaust) and now want one enough to start looking in earnest.

If any of you guys know of an Aero 8 that might be for sale or coming up for ssale at up to mid 30s, could you post here or PM me?

Just to let you know that Parkgate Garages in Northern Ireland have a Series 1 for sale with 4000 miles if your interested. You'll get their contact details on the Morgan website, under UK dealers.
Hope this helps.

Hope so - thanks for the heads up, as this car isn't listed anywhere that I could find it. Called Phillip Kennedy there this morning for a nice chat, and I liked him a lot. He's going to send me pictures later on, so I'll let you know how I get on. I think he said the car has about 6000 miles on it now, but that's neither here nor there - it's low enough to hardly matter.

Silver with grey, I believe, and I'll post pictures as soon as I have them. Later today with a bit of luck.

Keep them coming, though. This one's relatively pricy (though it sounds lovely), so if you guys know of any others, please do let me know. Thanks.

ETA - Damn this place is quiet. tumbleweed

Wel..... having waited all day, the photos weren't all that I hoped. The one here is one of the nicer ones, but as you can see, is a little on the small and blurry side. One at a time, I got about 15 photographs in all, pretty much all of which looked like they were taken by a camera 'phone. Perhaps someone knows this car and has a better picture?

Looks interesting - get then history - thats the same colour scheme as the one evo thrashed bloody hard for their Aero vs Tuscan Vs M3 test back in about 2002/3.

It may not ahve done many miles but if it was the factory demonstrator you will probably be wise to get it given a good once over just in case the enthusiasm with which it's been hurled about has caused any issue (unlikely though).

Theres a cheap one at SGT at the moment in dark blue - looks good only 16k miles. I'm sure as you are serious then they would meet you halfway for a test drive!

Thanks for the tip. I don't think it's the EVO car, as the dealer says it was one ordered by them from new. But I will check. Seen the SGT car and it looks nice - another one to look at I think. Anything else floating around that I don't know about?

Carandclassics have a pretty good showing of Aero's usually worth a look

It's always worth looking at the MMC site, there are a couple of Aero's on there that meet your criteria though by now they may be sold. Also, Allon White have several Aero's and Brands Hatch Morgan have a nice looking Red one (not everyone's favourite Aero colour!). Links are as follows:

Thanks, Aeroman. I've been keeping an eye on the MMC site, and saw that red one you mentioned - I quite like it, though my accountabilabuddy isn't so keen. Please do post if you know of or find anything else, though. I've had some more photos and details through on the N.I. car, and will go to have a look at that one in any event, though again, it's the priciest S1 I've seen at 40k.

The dealers that I have spoken to recently have said that the Aero is selling particularly well this year and prices are much firmer than in the past. The positive press in EVO and the Telegraph has also helped enormously with residuals. Certainly, there don't appear to be many for sale just now whereas when I put my Series I up for sale in 2005, RTCC had eight for sale shortly after. eek

Good luck with your search and I hope you find something suitable soon. beer

Doh I missed this thread! I know the car you are on about. I saw it about 8 months ago in said garage. It was one of the very first Aero's off the line if I recall. In fact it was one of the first 10 apparently. It is also for sale in the republic at another garage:

www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carid=575477

I have some pictures I took of her when I saw her. She seems in good nick, perhaps a little worn in places but still nice! If I were you I would get a price from the garage listing it in Dublin, Richford Motor Company as I have used the other one before headache

Hi Guys
I can catagorically confirm that the car in Richford Garages is NOT the same car as in Parkgate garages. Infact Parkgate had this other car in for a service about a year ago and it was very tired indeed. It is in no way comparable to the MINT condition that the V8 YYY car in Northern Ireland is. I hope this helps in the search for one of these unbelievable cars.
