Having neglected my moggie over winter, I now see that the rims of the wire wheels are erupting into the first stages of rust. It seems that metal polish removes the worst of it, but it quickly returns. Is it possible/economic to get the wheels rebuilt with new rims (or get the existing rims re-chromed) or is the best option getting them painted? Body colour velvet green - suspect it might look a bit heavy with painted wheels. Another option is to find a set of factory alloys. Any views?

Cheers

Can't help you myself - but maybe posting in the classics section might give you access to a larger number of wire wheel owners?

The wheels can be stripped and re-chromed... but this is both time consuming and costly. As each wheel needs to be broken down into Hub, Wires and rim as they need to be chromed and polished seperately. Then put back togeather and straghtened.

They can be painted reletively inexpensively but the paint tends to chip and pooling can occur around the spoke holes. (assuming you paing in situ and not broken down)

They can be powder coated wich gives a hi-gloss or matt finish including some nice candy apple effects. (may not be the best as you will be able to see through to the original metal work)

Lastly probably the best option, would be to purchase a set of the new morgan Stainless Steel wire wheels.. never rust again, esentially a permanent fix and allows you to keep shiny (unpainted - My preference) wheels.

Thanks MrT and CS - I'll post in classics and/or start saving for stainless wires. Amazing how quick chrome goes when you leave it for a few weeks... Blast it

It was not due to any neglect on your part. The finish on good chrome wires can last for decades. Your era of Factory Plus 8 wires rust if you stare at them hard, Chronic problem. Your options are center lock alloys (which have problems of their own and you will have to hunt for a set), Daytons (a US manufacturer) or Motor Wheel Services (MWS) all stainless.

Forget rechroming or painting.
