Hi all,

Just thought I'd pop in the forum to say I have just ordered a new Morgan today from John Gill's in Bedale, Yorkshire today.....:)

Going down to Malvern Link next month to decide on the exact colour and specification, with a view to March '06 delivery....

I previously owned a + 8 way back in 1978, and have always hankered after another Morgan....

Hopefully see some of you at several meets next year..:)

nice! what model morgan is it? got pics? and what extras?

Im debating getting (a second hand) morgan around xmas time. being only 21 limits me to the 1.8 4/4.

while we're on the subject, are their any owners clubs forums for morgans anywhere. ive tried a few links ive found on this forum, and while they work, there is no real active morgan forums with lots of owners, that i can find anyway

Congrats on the purchase

Thanks James,

Will be a choice between a 4/4 or plus 4, I will not need to decide till I visit the factory.

My last plus 8 was Royal Ivory with red leather, a lovely combination, (IMO), I might go for that again, but again, no rush to decide this.

Good luck if you decide to go for one, there's nothing like open top Morgan motoring, and as you know depreciation is VERY low, in fact I sold my plus 8 for more than I paid for it, although the waiting list was eight years at the time.......

yeah. its always been my moms dream car, and my granded personally knew Peter morgan (god rest both their souls)

My personal dream car has always been a Honda S2000, but with the insurance, it was £5k.

So i want to try something different. Ive always wanted a morgan but thought they would be out of my league insurance wise, but at just around £1300, thats nothing, so im pleased with that.

Will yours be a daily driver? and how easy is the roof to put up? Mine will be the only car, so it will get well looked after.

im presuming the 4/4 isnt that slow either, with the zetec engine, and not much weight, id imagine it goes along at a fair pace.

Wonder how many other morgan owners there are out there that are 21, its not really the young drivers car of choice, but i like to be different

No, I will be using the car purely for pleasure, I doubt whether I'll cover more than 1500 miles pa.

The Zetec is a cracking engine, very reliable and tough, but I understand all 4/4's in future will be fitted with Duratecs....

However, to me, Morgans are not about outright speed, (if you want that buy a Porsche,) no, enjoy them for what they are, a throwback to the golden age of motoring, when petrol was 5/8d a gallon and never a speed camera in sight....

Go for it JAmes - they're definitly individual cars - main reason I bought my aero. HAve to get used to being stared at and asked questions in every petrol station but thats half of the fun!

the Aero is what id be building up too by having a 4/4. The Aero is a stunning car in every way. I cant think of one single reason not to buy one.

James,
We are in the same boat. I am 21 and looking to buy a 4/4 as well. I currently use my dad's car which is a 1979 4/4 4 seater as my main car with no problems.

I am looking for a 80's car due to budget. I would be doing about 15,000 miles a year in it.

If you a buying for a main car to use everyday you need to be carefull as adding alot of miles can losse alot of money.

You are welcome to ring or email me for advice or discuss it.

Insurance wise I was quoted £800 a year for a Zetec 4/4 with NU, a CVH car with them was £1200, however on Lancaster Classic Policy a CVH was £600 agaisnt £1000 for the Zetec. That was for 15,000 miles a year.

How much do you have to spend?

Good Luck

William

Hi,

thanks for the advice. Its nice to see a few younger people looking to buy morgans. i keep getting called grandad by my friends

But anyway, as far as miles are concerned, i dont do THAT many. my work is only 1 mile away and one mile back. any other miles will be done for pleasure.
I saw an S plate Morgan 4/4 with 70k miles on for just under £15k so i see what you mean about keeping it low miles as most cars im looking at are 5 years old with 6k miles, but id probably have a "beater" for the more horrible days but im undecieded on that one yet.

As for budget, I have a job and can afford a loan. As its been a family dream car for a long time, im thinking if im gonna get one, i'll pay the money and get a good one. so im thinking around £20k for the car.
The insurance is about £1400 for me a year (21, 0NCB, no claims/crashes).

Also while we are on the subject, do the more modern morgans have Power steering?

Hi,
For 20k you should get a good one. If you go for over ridders and a hardtop they can look quite mordern.

My friends thinks Morgans are great and all want one after being out in my dad's.

I am currently a student at St Andrews, which is a ideal place for it.

The new ones are far easier to drive and more like a modern car.

The 1998 one for sale at Allon & White is a nice car and would be a good buy. I have considered it and it would sell for under £14k. You would have a Mordern morgan that you would not losse any money on.

Thanks,
William

yeah i thought about the 1998 one but i think id rather go for one with a bit lower mileage.

Also, whats the difference between the 4/4 and the +4, from what i can see, the +4 is just a 2 litre engine instead of the 4/4's 1.8 but the +4 is cheaper for me to insure by some £400

Hi,
The +4 has a Rover Two Litre engine or a Ford one if it is brand new.

You can put a supercharger on the Rover engine which gives it alot of power, I think over 200 bhp.

It is on a wider chassis aswell as it is on a Plus 8 Chassis.

You can either go for a new one, or a long door one pre 2001 or something like that. They started remaking them in 1985, but I would go for a 1990's one.

I think I will get myself a Plus 4 after I have bought a 4/4 and have a bit more cash.

You would be best of with a Post August 1997 Long door car which ever model you buy, they are better built and easier to live with.

Which insurance company are you quoting from?

hmm, still undecieded with 4/4 or +4. 4/4 might be better. id like this one: www.morgan-motor.co.uk/sales/used_car_locator_details.phtml?id=1557
but no doubt it will be sold by the time i get round to getting cash together (got a few months to wait before im in a position to think about getting one)

insurance quotes are coming from churchill as ive found them to be the cheapest on more or less everything ive tried.

James

Why don't you ask Stratton's if you coulld place a deposit on the car? As Morgan stock is not going to turn over as quickly as most mainstream metal you may be surprised at their reponse.

i might well do. After next week ive got 9 days off work, so i might pop down and have a spin in it. Having never driven one yet, i want to see what its like before i commit to anything.

I have sat in the latest Roadster which I believeto be the same cabin as a 4/4 and Plus 4. It was quite snug and I at 5'4 struggled reach the pedals whilst sitting at a safe distance from the steering wheel.

They are a lovely car, no doubt about it. I think my only concern is what other cars I can buy for the same money. At £40K there is a lot of lovely cars around. It still doesn't stop me liking them though.

yeah i also have the "Think what else you could buy for the money" thought, but ive always wanted a soft top, and a soft top thats a morgan, with very little depriciation and thats easily insurable for even me, is a winner. I also wanted something with a bit of poke, and as i said earlier, i know speed isnt the point with a morgan, but i presume it could pick its feet up and move if it wanted too, even with the 1800 zetec in.

Hi,
The one you have picked is a very good buy as it has a Simmonds hood which would of cost over £3000 alone, far better than the factory offerings.
