I was looking at my brakes yesterday (changing light bulb that had gone). When I wondered how I get the Rotor (Disc) off, most cars I have come across have the Central nut and a split pin to undo to release the rotor fron the hub. On the 500 it has a big inverted (female) nut about 1.25 - 1.5" accross - is there a special tool to get this off (and not a split pin in sight).? Was thinking of putting the Peninsula 283mm front rotors on when they next need changing....

The big nut just holds the hub on. You don't need to touch it to remove the discs. The disc should lift off (with gentle persuasion) once the caliper is cleared out of the way. The disc is only held in position by the road wheel and wheel nuts, but is usually located firmly in place with a little surface rust. Some cars have a little grub screw to hold the disc in position, but not on the Chimaera as far as I'm aware.
Hope this helps.
