Pulling away somewhat quickly today from a set of lights, just had to embarrass the guy in a Boxter with his blonde tottie, and found that although I had released the clutch pedal completely it remained engaged for a short period. Is this slipping under a heavy right boot a sign I need a new clutch???

Sounds like it to me, I'd start planning to get it replaced if I were you. Get the clutch fully engaged before you pile on the power and it could last quite a bit longer, but if you let it slip under power it could wear out very quickly indeed. If it gets *really* bad and starts slipping in normal driving, you can stretch its life another few miles to get you home by dropping down the gears, using more revs and less torque.

Hope this helps,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Thanks for the advice.

I assume I'm still on the original clutch, 36K not bad. Are there any benefits / downsides to fitting an uprated item??

Errr it is an uprated item already. Usually an AP or Borg Warner but many mnay different versions have been fitted so it is normally take clutch out to find out what was fitted. Replace the release bearing and check the release arm for wear. Replace if necessary.

It is not a Rover SD1 clutch in the first place. You could fit a twin plate but the take up is so viscious that they start breaking drive shafts and things.
