Erratic idling...Eric Idle!?!
Discussion
Its taken ages to find out why my 4.0HC doesn't like to idle when hot, but prefers to stall or idle at 2000rpm. Fistly suspected idle speed stepper motor as its a common failing, wasn't this. Eventually sourced some OBD equipment for LandRover engines that plugs into ECM.
This kit suggests 2 error codes, one being the vehicle speed sensor signal is crap and the other is fuel starvation. A bit more digging shows that the ECU only uses the vehicle speed sensor for speeds below 5kph (i.e. idling state). I haven't fixed the issue yet, need to get the car on axle stands to locate the transmission sensor & wiring, but its taken me that long to find a possible solution I though I would share it. Haven't thought about the fuel starvation one yet, but will change the fuel filter for starters.
The OBD kit also shows real time data for stepper motor position, lambda sensor voltages, fuel temp, coolant temp, engine speed, tune resistor settings etc etc etc. Very useful, but unfortunately had to give it back to my collegue!
Hope this helps anyone sharing a similar problem, as my head is sore from banging it against the wall for the last 6 months!!
My winter car (SAAB 9000) has packed up, so the TVR has come out of hibernation. It is really, really, really good to get the roof off and clear the cobwebs. You tend to forget just how f***ing fast these cars are when you drive crappy euro-boxes all winter, as a Honda Prelude VTEC, BMW 328, Subaru Imprezza Turbo etc etc have already seen!! Not that I advocate road racing or anything....
The noise when you reach 4000rpm makes it soooo hard to change up!! Ahh I remember just why I bought this car!!

Re Fuel starvation error. This is a possibility if the engine is running lean at tickover it could run badly or fast. It is possible an injector is partially blocked, but this would normally cause poor running throughout the range. Any continuous fuel starvation problem would cause poor running all the time.
