Exhaust Gaskets (Again!)
Discussion
Not the first time for a post on this thread, and for that I apologise, but....
My off-side front manifold gasket needs replacing. Tightening the bolts didn't work .
1) Is it remotely possible to replace this gasket without undoing the other 6 bolts, or am I likely to do the manifold serious damage (is it flexible enough?)
If it is then I'll waste next Saturday doing it...after all, I don't need really need skin on my knuckles!
2) If I can't do it without undoing all 8, then I will probably seek professional assistance - the car is going to Fernies on Thursday - has anyone had this job done there recently? How much did it cost? I've seen one thread quoting £300 (ouch!), another quoting £95 (not so bad). Anyone used anyone else in the High Wycombe area?
If it makes any difference I drive a 1993 Chimaera 4.0.
Cheers
Paul

You know what, I reckon you could do it without taking all the bolts off. You'll have to undo it at the cat though, otherwise there will be no way that it will move enough to slide the new one in and you will have to loosen the other bolts plenty.
The good news is that it's the easy side that's gone, so if do undo all of the bolts it's not that bad.

I had a similar problem on my previous Griff, I removed the exhaust as it had stress cracks and refitted with new gaskets. Same story leaking gaskets so after some advice doubled the gaskets and no more problems, as always would recommend no matter what bolt you undo on a car assembly with a lubricant such as copper slip. You may have to go back a while later and it saves so much trouble.

Has this done last year, was about £600 I think (part of a Major service so nice bill for me )
It is a very labour intensive job and that is where the cost comes in. But saying that they were a Main Dealer when I had it done.. By the way, they are lovely strong looking things they put on !!

The usual symptom is a loud ticking noise coming from the top of the engine which changes with engine revs which may go away once warm. Sounds like a knackered camshaft on an OHC engine. Or, you may be able to see scorch marks on the block/gasket where gases have been escaping.
I believe the car should still run OKish, it will sound a bit rough though!

On mine I noticed a tapping type noise at about 2000 revs, this got louder as time went on. The time I really knew they were gone is driving over Snake Pass with the roof down coming out of Glossop (sound knowledgeable for a southerner don't I?) and could hear the tapping resonating off the cliff face.
The reason for the expense is generally both sides are done at the same time, if one's gone the other isn't going to be far behind.
