I had been thinking of selling my 96N Chimp for a few weeks, but had been reading on this forum, like the rest of us , about the rapidly decreasing residual values of TVR's in general !! According to a few recent posts my 96N was only worth approx £13.5 k ??
I felt this was a little low so decided to place the ad for £15.5k and be open to sensible offers !!
Imagine my surprise when the phone virtually rang off the wall !! I had 15... yes 15 phone calls !!!
The car sold on saturday, the day after the advert came out for full money !!!! With so much obvious interest i didnt feel the need to have to take an offer so early !!!
So I say to all you doom and gloom mongerers...."stick yr low prices up yr a**e !!!!
I get the impression that the prospective buyers on here recently trying to talk prices down are indeed "dreamers", trying to get something for nothing !!!.... something they OBVIOUSLY cant afford !!!!!!
Get a life guys, go and buy a hot hatch and be happy !!!!

Quite agree. I had my 94L on the market at £14k just before Christmas and had two calls before I changed my mind and decided to keep it.

Condition, condition, condition.

PS - Very pleased for you.

I think you're about right there. Private sales :

Nice 'P' plate = circa £16k
Nice 'N' plate = circa £15k
Nice 'M' plate = circa £14k
Nice 'L' plate = circa £13k
Nice 'K' plate = circa £12k

Dealer prices would be £1k - £3k more than these.

Some may be cheaper (depending on location, mileage, how quickly the seller wants a sale etc) and some may be a bit more expensive (if really really mint, good colour etc). Older ones will probably be harder to shift as the perception is (as I understand it) that with older ones the risk of major work required / more chassis rust, bits wearing out etc is greater.

You say recent posts were negative re: values but did anyone say anything much different to the above table then ?

They will lose approx £1k pa whatever happens at this age won't they (and a lot more when new)?. That's why a newish ones around £30k, a 'W' plate around £25k, a 'T' reg is around £20k, yours was just over £15k and a nice very early one is about £12k

Yes I KNOW it's dependent on each individual car but the above table is a good guide to the values of nice ones in a private sale isn't it ? Otherwise where do you start if you don't have a guide ?. How would you know not to pay £20k for an 'M' plate ?. There has to be some kind of ball park price guide doesn't there ??

As regards tatty and/or high mileage / poor historied older ones - well I just don't think there is a market at all hence they don't figure here. Who'd buy such a thing ? Most people buy for fun and can afford a nice one or not at all. No point buying a tatty one.

I'm no expert here. I haven't even bought one (yet). I'd be happy to pay the above prices when I do though.

Bl**dy hell - I just can't win with you lot can I.

I disagree and I get stick. I agree and I get stick.

Why can't I make clear and reasoned comments without people getting excited ?. Check the table against the for sale / recently bought sections and you'll probably find it's about right. Which part of this is a problem ? Why can't people looking to buy for the first time get some reasoned help and guidance from you lot ? (please don't give me the "all cars are different and you have to look at them" thing - what I need is a "don't drive to Glasgow to look at a £20k Chimaera cos they're NEVER worth that much" type thing - more generic ball park than specific - i.e. if I'm going to look at a nice 'M' plate what should I be looking to pay if I get there and it is nice ?)

Mikey T - what exactly is your problem this time ?.

Ahhhhh. Mikey - I'm touched. Maybe I should buy one after all.....

Actually I'm torn between Pre Cat Griff and an early Chimarea. It'll only be a weekend car / toy so the Griff thing appeals - they're so good looking. Chuck's Chimaera sounds really nice though and would probably be just the job (see 'for sale' section). Just need to sort out a second car limited mileage [say 2,500 pa] quote from somewhere (pref under £500 premium). I am 37 and live in a low risk rural area (with a garage) so I'd hope to be able to get a reasonable quote from a modern classic specialist.

Can prob stretch to £12k for the car but Chuck's after more I think and I can't be asked to do the haggling thing and can't afford to go higher. I'd want him to be happy with the price and look after it between agreeing to buy and picking it up !!!!

Back to the drawing board........
