Here's a quicky;

What revs would you all class 'trashing' your V8 at. I'm using mine more regularly, but I hardly take it above 3K (never really need to). Recently I've taken it for a good blat on the weekends and have enjoyed (albiet carefully) holding the revs up to about 5K.

Is this driving it hard (ie 5K) or am I still acting like a wuss.

I ask, because, there really is a world of difference when you get over 3K, things really start to happen, especially the noise

Its a funny one - pushing it too hard in this weather can introduce some interesting "moments" which is probably not that much fun if you arent used to it (like me). But to be honest, it is very easy to forget that you can make considerable progress on effectively low revs....

Yes things do fly at the higher rev range, but the power is so low down and the torque will lift you past most modern normal cars. Just wait until Summer - dry roads, sunny weather - they let it fly and see the difference...

Cheers,

Paul

Over 5500 revs. After that there's no reason not to change up -- and good reasons to do so...

Depends which engine you have - book sez 400 and 450 red line at 6500 - so you would have to go there sometime or other. Not in these crap conditions though.
500 is max power at 6k so obviously 6 occasionally, but not very often - they will here you coming and fuel bill will go through the floor!!

Steve, you're being a wuss! You'll soon notice that when the acceleration stops it's time to change up. Either that or you reach the 'red' line and the revs cut.
As for thrashing it, do whatever makes you smile, be that 30mph at 2000rpm or 130mph at 4500rpm.
Cheers........ Andrew

I tend to limit my 5L to 5000 rpm, as was said before, with that much torque no need for more. According to the bible the limiter is not effective until 6800 rpm! Also think that some sympathy for the engine will pay dividends in the long run.

My limiter was set at around 6000 which I think is pretty standard -- it was breathed on by Mark Adams so now it's 6200 but all the same I almost never go there. As someone's already said, you need to have some sympathy for the bits whirling round -- not just the engine but your oil and water pumps, alternator, distributor etc...
