Well, Im no expert (at anything) but it is something to do with the Octane rating. The Super unleaded is 98 RON or so, ordinary is 95 or so (in theory) and the higher the Octane rating the better the combustion or something like that.

I use ordinary unleaded as the timing has been adjusted on mine to cope. When you use Ord if the car doesn`t judder and pink then it could be ok.. get it checked by a mechanic tho.

I've tried ordinary unleaded, super and Shell Optimax. I can notice a huge difference when I've got a tank of Optimax compared to the Ord or Super - they both seem the same.

On Optimax, the engine runs so much smoother and does seem to slightly more responsive, although I have read mixed reviews on the forum about it though!

Try 'em all and see what feels best!

If you use unleaded in a Chim or Griff that has not been adjusted to do so, then over time it will start wearing the engine more than normal through pinking as it does not have a higher enough Octane level to match the ignition/ECU settings. One of the favourites is for the engine to start coking up which makes the matter worse. It can lead to pre-detonation, where it is possible to blow holes through pistons... I know of at least a couple of cases where this has happened. Owner thought that all cars were now capable of running on unleaded fuel despite the warning stickers on the petrol cap and in the owners handbook. The warrenty claim was rejected BTW

There is an Unleaded FAQ on my website which goes into the details. This is also covered in the bible. You can use unleaded in an emergency but don't labour the engine. Alternatively carry a small bottle of octane boost with you. I use Millers on the 520.

As for Optimax... not noticed any real difference.
