If I change gear and let the clutch out quickly, I get a clunk noise, as the transmission takes up the power, coming from the rear of the car. I also get the same noise to a lesser degree by coming on and of the accelerator whilst driving in the higher gears. Is this normal?

Have the same noise with my Chim. Did not know if it was the exhaust banging on the body work due to a loose bracket (had the same problem on a golf)

I had this problem on my 5.0 Chimaera. It was the differential mounting bush and it was a pig to sort out as it is virtually inacessible. If this is the problem you MUST get it fixed as it will seriously damage components otherwise.

Diff bolts work themselves loose over time, if you leave it too long they may rip themselves out (damaging the diff casing and leaving the diff free to smash against the chassis). They are normally checked during the service but if you've got a lot of backlash in the transmission this is one thing to check for.

Cheers,

Thanks for the replies guys. To put it in perspective, it is only a relatively small backlash. This is my first rear wheel. Is a small amount of backlash to be expected?

I too suffered the differential clunk & whine on the overrun and recognised the noise as I had heard before in my carpetless competition RS1600, I sent my Chiamera back to the dealer and QH agreed I had a very noisy diff. & changed the rear axle under warranty. The new axle was marginally quieter but frankly not worth the bother. After 12 years of driving TVR's I accept it's not every car you drive lying on your back with your head only 2 ft away from a limited slip diff.

I had the same problem and someone suggested it could have been a diff bush. Just don't ask how much it costs to replace it!

Eventually it turned out to be the diff mounting bolt was loose (as someone else suggested). Probably the first thing to look at.

As mentioned by GREENV8S have your diff bolts checked. I had a similar noise which I ignored (my first TVR) until I totally lost drive. Once the diff drive shaft bolts are loose they can easily shear off due to the levels of torque.
