When you switch the ignition and start the car a green light to the right of the steering wheel comes on and then gradually goes off.. I took the car out tonight and the green light stayed on... anyway please know what this is?

thanks

Er, is there an icon or some lettering on the light? I don't think there are any lights on my dash that don't have something scrawled on them.

If it's on the right, it sounds like the "MIL" light, which is engine management or something, isn't it?

Hmmmm, speaking of which, must get a new bulb (LED?) in mine. It used to flash very briefly as the fuel pump primed, but since the car came home from it's stay in Norfolk, it hasn't done.

Nope it has no lettering or icons on, simply a green light which the handbook doesnt mention. could it be the alternator warning light.. just a thought.. anyone got any ideas?

You should know where the no-charge warning, brake warning and oil pressure warning lights are. These are the 'do not pass go' lights that warn you to stop and switch off imediately. (If they don't come on with the ignition, get them fixed as they warn you about critical problems.)

Assuming it isn't one of these, could it be a frost detector?

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

I know that the warning lights are and i very much doubt that a warning light as important as those described would be green... i didnt think the chimp had a frost warning light, i know the griff does though.. anyone confirm.. nothiong in the manual about it..

The frost detector should be a green/yellow/red snowflake symbol between the speedo and rev counter. On my 97 P, the oil pressure and no charge lights are the crappy looking ones in the speedo itself.

Speaking of the frost detector... does anyone's actually light up anything other than red? The manuel reckons it should go green for 2-4 degrees, yellow for 0-2 and red below 0. Mine only ever goes red.

Mine, 98 Chim, does green and red, never seen yellow. Bloody offputting (is that a word?) flashing on and off though.

It is a bit off putting, I tend to panic when I see red lights on the dash, normally spells imminent (sp) doom!!

It does kind of emphasise "put your foot down hard now sunshine, and your buggered!!"

Guys

thanks for all the help.. mine is a 96 p plate chimp, and i dont seem to have a snowflake symbol, this light is green and on the right hand side of the wheel (if you were sat in the car). It just goes green, on and off, i assumed as it was green that it wasnt anything too bad.. so is it the FROST DETECTOR.. as the manual doesnt mention it....

My 97P 500 has a frost detector but like Marshy's it only ever goes red. Also I suspect that it isn't that acurate as it has been read when its "relatively" warm outside still.

Phil

is your on the left hand side of the hash though, as mine is nearest the drivers door, and has no symbol just a green LED.

Ice detectors often fail in open circuit, hence the constant RED light. The one in my Griff used to work but is now showing only Red.

Will get it fixed one day....maybe.

Graham
PS. I used to have a Green LED on my old Griff to tell me that the fans had come on. Could it be something similar?

My 97R Chimaera 500 has it between the speedo and tacho, as mentioned by others. I've only ever seen it red too.

When you first turn the key isnt the ice detector supposed to go through a diagnostic routine that quickly flashes all the colours at you, mine does?

I've only seen mine green when running, but I am sure that it will be red soon enough.

Matt.

Pretty sure mine is on the right had side - or maybe the centre. Can't recall. I'll take a look tonight.
I think it might have a snow flake on it, but you can't tell that when its lit up !

On all chims as far as I know, the outside air temp warning indicator is in the centre of the dash as you look forward.

It tells you the outside air temperature, and not if there is frost on the road. It's supposed to be a guide that if it's that cold, there's probably going to be some frost!

Green 4c to 2c
Orange 2c to 0c
Red 0c or less

Mine's only ever gone to orange, I don't think it's been cold enough outside yet.

In the winter you'll find the green one comes on and stays on for a while. You'll often get it flicking on and off every so often too, depending on how sensitive it is.
