whats 'Water Wetter' ?????? cheers chris
quote:
I have just fitted an alloy rad to my 500 as it has split two standard rads. I am also using "water wetter" now which reduces temp even further. Car runs at <70 now on the motorway, where it used to run at 80-90. Will still climb to 90 in traffic. Fans cut in just after 80 on my gauge, but alloy rad is so efficient they only stay on for a short while now. Basically the car now has a cooling system that works, before it didn't.
500 does run a lot hotter than 400, but IMHO thats because the cooling system cannot cope with the 500, certainly not in pre facelift cars.
------------------
Chaps, Mine is a 97P and up until recently sat at around 70-80, and about 90 in traffic, so not too bad really. I say up until recently cos the bleeding things stopped working!!!! Any ideas why and how to check?

You mean the fans stop coming on? Or the guage stopped working ?

Fordy Water Wetter is an additive makes water more able to transfer heat, basically. You use it preferably with straight water as mixing with ethylene glycol (antifreeze) reduces its effectiveness. Makes your engine run a lotcooler with no modifications.

RJM The alloy rad was expensive, made as a one-off, there are I beleive cheaper alternatives available now. I fitted it myself, not too difficult a job. Can't remember the company or the cost, but I can dig the details out. £450 rings a bell but I am not sure.

Ive read somewhere that you can fit Cerby fans which move more air, if true it's bound to be cheaper than a rad change

Sorry to drag this thread up again but I've only had my car a few weeks so still a relative novice...Anyway, starting up and running until warm the fans are off. Then the temp reaches 90C, fans come on but then stay on whether in traffic or not. Temp is then 85C on the move and 90C-92C in traffic and the fans are ALWAYS blasting away when I reach home even after a careful drive with temp at 90C. Can anyone share similar experiences, thanks. You may have a lower temp otter switch fitted. they switch the fans on at 92 and off at 86, OR it may be broken/sticking. The otter switch is fitted in the swirl tank near the radiator - its easy enough to drain down and take it out and test it in some hot water.

Thanks for the reply Fordy but I think my question was a bit cryptic. What I meant to ask was this: 1)In the abscence of an obvious problem is it OK/normal for the temp to never fall below 85C (I know the guage is not necessarily accurate) even in cool weather and cruising. 2)Is it a)Ok b)normal c)nothing will break if the fans are on all the time? Thanks for what will hopefully be reassurance in advance ! Driller Ice Blue Griff500

Perfectly normal. Fans on all the time is also normal, but only if in traffic - if your fans are staying on when flying down the motorway then i would think there is a proble somewhere - but a temp of 85 is fine - mine runs at about 80 in cold wather on the motorway and around 90 if its hot - then is upto 95 with the fans on in slow moving or stationary traffic. Another point - the temp gauges are not very accurate, but using the fan switching point is - they switch on at 92 - see what your gauge is reading at that point. cheers Chris

I think Demon Tweeks stock Water Wetter - its produced by Redline. I doesn't have any significant antifreeze properties, I think they recommend adding no more that 15% normal antifreeze for winter use, but this would reduce the cooling advantage by 50%. I keep mine in a nice cosy garage, and tend not to use it in bad weather these days, so I just use the water wetter and water.

Antifreeze also acts as a rust inhibitor, does Water Wetter have this property too?
