Got the Griff back from Tower View so... the long awaited Tower View/Roll centre roll bars are now available. See

www.t-v-r-services.co.uk/tvrs_rollbar.htm for details and piccies.

At last indeed! Looks good too - I'll join the queue.

Looking at the photos, is the bar wide enough? It looks like the sides of the hoop are in line with the middle of the seats. Being a tall bloke, it still looks like my head might be the first thing to hit the ground if the car flipped, unless I managed to wrap myself round the transmission tunnel first.

As it says in the blurb, the problem for tall blokes is that with a wrap around bar onto the seat belt mount, means you can't have the seat back so much which makes it uncomfortable to drive and also means that you head is touching/very close to the bar as the headrest is underneath it or even behind it. Both of which are real no-nos as a simple shunt could cause your head to collide with a substantial piece of steel which is not going to do you any good at all. As this is more likely to be the sort of accident you will be involved in, it doesn't make sense to compromise in this case.

To do what you request, can be done but the vast majority of owners did not want to loose the ability to have the seat where they wanted, the use of the seatbelt and so on. If you want that type and please bear in mind the restrictions, give them a call and discuss it.

Tks Steve. I understand it is necessarily a compromise. I have to have the seat right back and laid back as far as it will go and even then it produces a "snug" driving position and howls of laughter from my girlfriend as I try to get in and out.

What is the rearwards visibility like with one of these installed?

Visibility with the roof up is pretty good: you can just see the bar at the top of the mirror. With the roof down the visibility is pretty bad anyway, especially if you don't take care to undo the velcro sides and get it flat as possible. With it flat you can see under the bar. With the roof just pushed down, the roof blocks it anyway, so no real change. Been driving round now for some several hundred miles and got used to it. Did remove the ABD sticker that the previous owner had placed - it was obstructing the rear view more than anything!

With roof down, I use wing mirrors and the "up periscope" technique ... I.e. I stick my head up and have a good look around ... looking like a pillock, of course.

Any idea of price to fit one to a later Griff 500?

Now there's an idea - a clip-on periscope for use when the hood is down.

There was a production car that actually did use a periscope for its rear-view mirror. Anyone care to pull on their anorak and remind me what it was?

That makes two of us then.

As for a Griff 500 cost £325 for the bar and fittings and call Tower View for a fitting quote: depends on finish, if you want full harness etc etc.

Up periscope! I have an inkling that this might have been the Lotus Europa, but can I phone a friend?

No, definitely not the Europa. My father owned one once (a Series 2) and there was no periscope.

I was thinking of something more exotic. I can think of at least 2 exotics that have had periscopes.

Isdera Imperator and Mercedes CW311 both have periscope RVMs. I've also seen a very early (pre-production?) Countach with a periscope much like the one on the "Silver Car" Esprit Giugaro prototype.
It was considered for the Mc F1. Might have been a good idea-the two RVMs are a little tricky to use... Centre seat-nice packaging shame about trying to drive the thing !
