wiper spring keeps springing !

Gave the Beast a well earned wash today but when I lifted one of the wipers up, the spring flew off !
Finally found that there is a spring and a 2 inch piece of wire that hooks round the base of the wiper arm at one end and onto the spring at the other end. However, when ever I reconnected it and put the wiper back onto the screen , the spring flies off again !
I reckon that the extra piece of wire isn't staying on the base of the wiper arm as it moves back into position. Any body got any experience of this ?
I managed to rig up a temporary fix with a bit of coat hanger, though the blade wont stay in full contact with the screen.
What shape should the piece of wire be at the base of the arm ? should it hook all the way round the arm or only just hook over the base of the arm ?
It might be that part of my wire has broken off.

Finally got it sorted last night.
Took the spring off the good wiper to take a look and then couldn't put it back without it sringing off like the 1st one. Not a happy bunny at the time.
I finally took the wiper arm off the car (actually the nut holding it on was only hand tight !) and found that on the under side of the arm (not possible to see without the arm off) about a half inch back from what seemed to be the base of the arm there is actually a small "peg" which the piece of wire is supposed to hook onto. Easy when you know how ! It just took most of the night and a few choice words to find out how !
