Gearbox whirring...
Discussion
When pulling away gently from rest in first or reverse, I get a whir or very gently grating sound from the gearbox/clutch area (quite difficult to hear but possibly louder in reverse)...no problems with the function of either (although the clutch thrust bearing is a little rumbly at idle in neutral with clutch out). 97 car, just coming up to 17500 miles. Ideas?
V8??...just four TL1000s zip-tied together, innit!?

Just to confirm it is after selecting the gear and moving off, not the graunch whilst engaging. I have no idea on the arrangement of the gearbox internals but I wonder (hope?) if it's just the natural sound of perfectly healthy gears meshing (I know from my bike experience that straight-cut gears are pretty noisy in motion). Might have to get the stethoscope out (you think I'm kidding?).

Pupp,
I began to have the same problem last week. When moving slowly, you hear a very, very faint kinda grating sound... and you can sort of 'feel' where it is as it happens?
I think mine started happening the other week. But it doesn't seem to happen all the time now. I took it to the dealer for them to check but they couldn't see anything wrong. Either means they didn't check properly or it's something hidden and terrible.
Have you taken your car up to any major high revs recently? I'm sure mine started doing it after I took the beast above 6000 rpm...
Doesn't seem to be any problems though. I've got a 97 4l with 21000 on the clock.

Are the pads all OK - inner as well as outer?

Thanks for the feedback guys...it's not road speed related but seems to be engine speed dependant. Apparent just at that point where clutch bites and movement commences...a faint metallic tinkling not unlike the sound on some cars (not TVRs!) when a gear is not quite home but much quieter if that makes sense. Couldn't honestly say mine's just started doing it...I think it's more the case I'm getting atuned to the noises it makes. Not convinced it's a "fault", just would like to know what causes it. Will be dropping g/box oil soon so guess that may show whether any undue wear has been occurring through colour or contaminants.

You are not engaging the gear fully.
Had this problem when I first bought my car...Spoke to tvr dealer who says the earlier gearboxes (Rover ones) are very loose (linkage problem). You can now get a kit that lets you upgrade your rover gearbox to the Borg version (Mole valley Redhill do this)..
But the noise is nothing major, just make sure its fully engaged. Get's worse as the gear box heats up (like in heavy traffic, and can make the gear linkage break (had this problem too) nothing major to rectify though!!!!!
Power is nothing without controll

I have had this problem before and it turned out to be a broken cluth spring. It may be the case that you are not able to hear it in any other gear except 1st and reverse.
Are there any other syptoms like.
1.has the problem suddenly started or is it an existing noise that has got worse.
2. Is there uneven take up of drive on the clutch and/or does it judder sometimes.
3.is it hard to get ingear

1. Existing noise, hasn't got any worse in 10k miles
2. No judder, no uneven takeup I'm aware off
3. Doesn't seem to be. Very occasionally baulks, but so did the others I test drove...
Think I know the noises you mean, as I think mine makes the same. It has always worried me slightly, but I have assumed that it isn't a problem. Complete guess, but I wonder if it a consequence of the gearing ratio being high making the geometry of the teeth meshing more awkward, i.e. just a design feature?
