Can anyone help. I have a 96 Chim with a standard 4litre engine, which cuts out while driving along. It will not restart although the electrics all work and the engine turns over, but without firing. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

Had a problem with this - the fuel pump relay had given up the ghost, so no fuel getting through.

Of course, it could be something else... thats the fun of it :-(

Had problem similar in my Cerbera, turned out to be the lambeda censor. Car would just not start although it would turn over OK.

My problem is slightly different, I can start my 4.0L in the morning when it is cold no problem, but if I try to pull away right away as soon as you touch the throttle pedal the engin dies out and if you do not give it a little help by putting you foot down more it will cut out all together and will not start for 10 mins. Even if you manage to keep it going the engine will cough and splutter until you are 1/2 mile down the road and then it is ok.
Now, if you let the engine heat up a little say 5 mins then everything is fine.
Does anyone know whet the problem is as it has just started, it is not a dirty stepper motor because I take it out a lot and clean it, could it be knacked, if so how can you test it.

Andrew's problem sounds the same as mine, which was sorted with new fuel pump relays, see Annoying Problem thread.

I had an "N" reg 4.0 that used to do that. It once stopped when I was hammering down the outside lane of the M40. I managed to roll onto the hard shoulder. As usual, it restarted after a few minutes and then ran perfectly OK.

It went back to Yarnolds TVR several times and eventually stopped doing it. They were never really sure what the problem had been. I have a "T" plate 4.0 now and have had a year of trouble-free motoring.

(See my previous post below)
Thats exactly what happened to me! Not M40, but the A1(M) on a Friday night at 5pm (just following the TVRCC track day at Croft as it happens - typical, you thrash it around the circuit all day without a problem, and half an hour later you're on the hard shoulder of the motorway after cruising gently at 70...) N reg 4.0 too.

I had a similar intermittent fault, which turned out to be a loose
connection on the low tension side of the coil.
Check the coil connections as they can corrode but may look O.K.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them if the most recent fix doen't work. The garage I use in the North West tells me that the problem was a loose connection to the immobiliser cutting off the ignition circuit - they tell me it's fine now, but they said that before the last time I sat waiting for the RAC!!
