Like, many others on this forum, I am thinking of converting from my BMW M3 Evo and Toyota Supra Turbo (new shape) to a TVR. Buy British!!

I will be using it as my everyday drive, but I only do a couple of miles or so and the reliability issues don't worry me too much as I understand these cars do have niggly problems, but they can be sorted.

I am trying to determine a budget however, you know insurance, running costs etc.. and the only thing I am not sure about is do TVR's (Chimaera) run on super unleaded or normal? and does it matter.

Cheers for your help, I'm looking forward to joining your ranks pre-Xmas.

Aim for about £1k insurance (depending on age + record...)
expect £1K for servicing/maintenance per year on average. (currently I'm running at less than this, but something is bound to be round the corner).

Fuel depends on the engine size apparently. I have heard of 4 ltr cars only ever being run on UL fuel, but my 5 ltr preffers Super UL.
However, even better that Super is Shell's Optimax. Better performance and responsiveness, better fuel economy and its cheaper than Super UL.

Check out www.pistonheads.com/fleet for some examples of running costs.

Super unleaded is recommended for all Chimaeras, Optimax is even better. Compared with other costs a few pence a litre is neither here nor there.

Plus people say they get better mileage out of optimax so comparing prices per litre exaggerates the true cost difference.

I pay approx £700 insurance for a M reg 4L. Servicing is every 6k and costs around £400-500 depending on the type.

go british. You won't regret it. there are two great pleasures; when it is top down and foot down on a country road, and when a young boy walks past when you are sitting at traffic lights and says "nice car"

I thought that was complusory, especially up Marlow High Street (getting a bit 'local' there).

It's even more fun in French villages, or just after you've passed a speed trap/cops sat doughnut munching.

Don't forget any opportunity to change down, blipping the throttle on the way. Especially effective at making people drop shopping/gardening implements/children and so on.

How childish. Next you'll be saying you rev around multi-story car parks setting off alarms... :-)

Pulled up outside a shop in Glasgow a few months back, waiting for a friend. Noticed these kids running up towards the car, one 14 year old poked his head in the window and said, "your car is as noisy as f**k mister".

Manek - Don't tell me you've never done it!!!
In fact coming home last Sunday 1:30am roof down I set off my first car alarm in a nice quiet residential area leading to my house - Oh how I laughed as I pulled up outside my house with the seductive rumble of the V8 set off nicely against the distant sound of a car alarm on the still morning air. ->

Drove the Chimaera up to a friends house once. His lad (6) comes out wide eyes staring at the blue beast.

"Your car's noisy, Don. Is it broken...?"

Couldn't have done it better if I'd paid him....

My mate who owns a brand new convertible Audi TT saw my car for the first time the other day... his words were:

"Mine is a sports car... but that is a racing car! It's f*****g amazing!"

Which I thought was a nice insight...

As sad as it is, I still can't help driving around the West End at night and getting stuck in traffic on purpose.

But how much do I want flames...???! Graham! Help me!
