From everything I've read on here over the last, umm, year and a bit, it sounds like the range you get with a particular car is randomly determined.

Mine works from about 12 feet away (or did last time I clapped eyes on the thing), and some only seem to work from 12 inches.

Hey I'm not joking. Press your fob against your chin and your body acts as an aerial increasing the range. I can disarm my car from my bathroom window using this technique. And no I don't have a very long chin!

Replacing the batteries improved the range on mine. Also heard said you should hold it near to the ground when pressing the button because the car picks up the signal off the chassis.
