I have an odd metallic, tapping sound coming from the boot. I wondered if there could be something loose in the fuel tank. Any ideas ? '96 Chimaera 4.0 Edited by marlboro on Tuesday 2nd October 11:23

If it sounds like something oscillating back and fore, then gradually coming to a rest it could be the sender unit clonking on the inside of the tank - mine's done this since I got the car, don't worry about it. I think it does it when the fuel tank is fullish. I just hope it's made of plastic and not metal (sparks, bang, no TVR) :-) T/.

Mine does that too - just one of those character things I guess!

This seems to be a recurring topic . My 94 4ltr had the same thing . Turned out to be the baffles had detached . Had to replace the tank , fortunately under warranty .

Why replace the tank? Had the baffles got stuck in the exit pipe and stopped the fuel flow? I guess we're lucky as the tank is easily accessible on these cars. What exactly do baffles in a petrol tank do anyway? I thought baffles lived in the exhaust silencer. T/.

especially when the tank is partly empty, the baffles are to stop the contents sloshing about. If you corner at decent speeds then 30 kgs of petrol sloshing to one side could be just enough to get you out of control. Rgds, WalterU

Tis true, weight transfer on the limit is a bad thing. Milk tankers also use baffles for the same reason!!

Cheers all, One other feature of this noise is that under acceleration it does not occur, only when braking or not on the gas. Just need to persuade my nephew to sit in the boot to confirm........maybe..

As someone who forgot to remove the spare wheel before a track day, then had it tear loose halfway around Redgate, I can attest that you do not want any significant weights moving side to side when you are giving it some!

"As someone who forgot to remove the spare wheel before a track day, then had it tear loose halfway around Redgate" First TVR (Chimaera 500) arrives on 12 November, just in time for frost and ice - been waiting since mid July I wasn't expecting a spare wheel with mine - just a can of some foam stuff. Having tracked Chim/Griff threads for the last couple of months, any advice on what else I should carry to deal with overheating (paper clip in otter switch I heard), alarm going off, stepper motor (??) seizing etc etc - Even tho it's new it seems I can expect all this anyway. Don't start the build quality stuff again - just ideas on useful essentials Thanks

5lTRE- Guess you may be better served by starting a new topic. The 'wierd noise' title may deter people from your thread on 'Overheating on track days'.. Just an idea
