Have a recurring ticking noise on 450 Chimaera, which goes away when hot. Various dealers say its stones in the cambelt and "they all do it "- any ideas ?

I don't get this, how many others out there think they have a cam belt ?....it's a pushrod engine!

I suggest removing the drive belt and removing all the little stones from it - easy with a little screwdriver. Once you've removed the belt once and replaced it once you'll find it easy - it's a bit of a bitch the first time though. If the noise persists ... You say the ticking noise goes away when warm - that sounds to me like a leaking exhaust manifold gasket. Try listening for which side of the engine it's coming from and tighten the bolts. It may just work (if not then you need to either spend half a day and get grazed knuckles/backache to change the gasket yourself or pay a dealer a few hundred notes to do both). Trefor/.

See the thread on manifold sealing and hopefully you will solve your problem.

Thanks for the advice. I guess it must be the belt

Don't be too harsh, after all it *does* have a cam chain. But in this case the problem is with the poly-vee drive belt that drives the ancilliaries. Cheers, Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)
