I recently purchased a 97R 4L Chimaera. The clutch was on its way out when I bought it so I decided to cut my losses and have it replaced. All has been well except that the clutch pedal has now developed a ratchetty squeak when the clutch is let out. It doesn''t do anything until the car warms up - it seems to get much worse in town and first came on when i got stuck in a long traffic jam on a steep hill. I also noticed that there appears to be some black oil which had seeped through from behind the clutch pedal though i wiped this off and none has so far re-appeared. Have checked Clutch fluid reservoir which is full. The clutch seems to select ok (i think it''s a bit graty in first but then i''m a not used enough to what it should sound like). Can anyone give me a clue?

Well, they tend to squeak quite heavilly, but as for the black oil... if it really is oil and not just water that's gathered clutch dust on its travels, then I'd be concerned. Does your engine use a lot of oil? It could be leaking through the crank oil seal. I'd have a good bet that its not oil though. Good luck.

I forgot to ask, who changed the clutch for you?

Xain - I'm sure it's not engine oil - always check it and i haven't used any and there's no tell tale signs on the garage floor. Also, the engine oil's pretty clean. I wondered if it might be clutch fluid because it's taken the paint off the plate behind the pedals. Clutch was changed by Fernhurst - I'm happy with the work they've done - just a bit mystified as to why the pedal's squeaking. Since clutch fluid's corrosive, i thought it might have been takeing the black off the rubber seal at the back of the plate. Just guessing here.

Could be the rubbers in the master cylinder, especialy if its leaking. Does it feel different when the engine is runnin? My old chim's clucth was smooth when the engine wasn't running, rough when it was. It was some shaft somewhere needed lubrication ( ooer )

Too much roof (and it still won't solve my squeaking clutch problem)!!
