In his excellent book "The TVR Griffith and Chimaera", Steve Heath mentions that the position of the front license plate can have a big impact on the air circulation through the radiator. Front end changed over the years so different positions are optimal for different cars, but decent airflow shouldn't be a problem after a bit of height adjustment. He also recommends you clear out the garbage that gets sucked into the grills. Having gone exploring round the front of my car I found a suprising amount of leaves and muck well wedged in and obstructing the airflow.

Over the weekend my front number plate somehow fell off !!!!. The result is that my chimera that allways used to run at 90 /100 degrees and used to boil me and understanding other half, now runs at 85 degrees everywhere and just about 90 when in heavy traffic. Obviously this is due to the improved airflow, being law abiding I have to put a plate back on the front and have seen some smaller ones on other TVR''s does any one have size details and perish the thought legal details. As I would love to fit one and avoid cooking myself any further
Hello JA, ive found a willing plate maker, ive opted for a 10" x 2.5" at 9 quid including vat and postage from a place in motorcycle news. 01933 273274. give em a call, very helpful, hope this helps. There are other ones so have a look at the ads in the back if you want. Cheers for now.
I tried taking my front plate off this morning, and around London the temp stayed at around 80 until I stopped in traffic(about 20 minutes after starting). That seemed like a big improvement, but the air *was* pretty cold.
On the motorway though, the temp was 79, only about 3 degrees down from normal (Since it dropped a little I'm assuming that it's still above the thermostat cutoff temp).
Not sure whether I want to run the risk of plod enquiring unless I'm sure it really helps. But a small plate lower down sounds interesting...
Incidentally, I was amazed the first time I looked at the radiator. The airflow seems almost completely blocked by the fan shrouds so that it all has to go through the fans. Great for the fans, not so great when they're off I thought...
