Failed emissions

Folks,

My 4.5 Chimaera has failed its MoT on emissions. Last time it really struggled and I have been asked to take it for a real blast before they test again.

Outside of a good excuse to stretch her legs, does anyone have any ideas what I can do to prevent this in the future?

Is the engine standard?
A good thrash does help, I always used to add a bottle of Forte pre emissions treatment a few weeks before.

Has your car been serviced? I'd start with that and check your ignition components are working how they should.

If you have Rovergauge or know someone with it, it would be worth plugging the car in. Could be a sensor out of range, something like one of the lambda sensors or coolant temperature.

Which part of emissions did it fail? If CO2 the slightest exhaust leak will cause it to fail.

Failed on CO2 despite taking it for a 1-hour run. Dizzy and rotor a bit corroded, has the sound of a minor misfire.

Garage took off the dizzy to clean it and the centre pin apparently broken (hmmmm…?).

Anyway, new dizzy and rotor on order, see where that gets us.

Mine failed a few years ago on emissions and it was the lambada sensors, changed them and all was good.

Obviously if it's misfiring it needs rectifying first.
Ignition components these days are not great quality wise so be careful where you buy from.
It's the cause of many a problem on these engines.

Misfires will make the system go rich (excess Oxy/O2 unburnt) so the 02 sensors will spool the ECU to richen AFR

To close this off, the new dizzy and rotor have sorted it.

Obviously had a minor misfire, upsetting the CO2 emissions.

Good to hear. It's frustrating how components that should be cheap and reliable are flaky and troublesome.
