Hi. Fitted better headlight bulbs today (200% brighter apparently). I’ve got full beam when headlights on and I push stalk away but don’t seem to be able to flash by pulling stalk towards me - think I was able to before….
Should I be able to flash with full beam (presume so)?
Any ideas on what to check?
Is that a MOT fail?
Thanks

Yes they should flash.
I’d probably revert back to old bulbs and see if they flash before looking any further.

Id say its the stalk at fault if high beam works as usual.

Agreed the stalk is faulty, used to happen when they were fitted in their original Vauxhall's.

^^^^ This.
My suggestion was really to confirm it’s not something to do with your 200% better bulbs but as I have had this fault myself it’s very likely to be the stalk.
Easy repair by just removing cowling and replacing the stalk.
If you have Leven or another aftermarket set of alloy stalks just hacksaw off the plastic arm and attach lever as designed. A little grub screw I think.

Thanks. New stalk ordered. Hopefully that will sort it and save me removing the sealant on the bulb hatch again!

Ha - so they do work…. For the benefit of others, they only flash with the engine running (or maybe ignition on).

Dip or high will work without ignition but flash has to have ignition on.

This is my favourite fix on a Chim so far 😁
A bit like the day I discovered the windows still operate when the car is off and the keys are in your pocket. TADT sir!

It's quite handy I find. smile to my surprise, my Mk3 Fiat Panda allows window operation after you've turned off the engine with no key in the ignition. But only until you open a door; definitely for those of us who forget to roll up the windows after stopping. smile

Yea, can start my mini (BMW) with the key not in the slot, and exit the car, lock it and leave it running, winter warm up . As long as you go through the motions without opening the door first.

Didn’t know that on the start up.
I’ll try that with my E Class.

Not the TVR - though driving that in icy conditions would be a bit crackers anyway!

For a moment I thought the up-rated bulbs had burnt out the switch

You get out through the window?

Changing bulbs and the switch then calling it a day is suspect

Up-rated bulbs wattage could have been the final count-down for the switch that was already old and suffering from the transportation of a 120 watt load for many years, the chances are that your up-rated bulbs were of the same current consumption but this needs to be checked

This problem is a mystery unless the up-rated bulbs have later been proven to be drawing a higher current than those that were replaced

The chances of changing a bulb with a bulb of the same wattage and its control system packing in are big

Hi polly. Suspect it is user error and simply not switching the ignition on. Now working as it should. I do now however have a spare / new switch in my stocks to fit if it becomes a problem!
