So, we're working on a Chimaera with LT77 and GKN diff, propshaft was mounted with the sliding joint on the diff side, but we have a strong suspicion it should be on the gearbox side.

Can anyone confirm?

Rebuilt the GKN and fitting a new prop

Does it matter?

Unlike a live axle there is little movement between diff and gearbox

Should be at the front just behind g/box tail-housing and yes it matters

Hi. Daft conversation really, but I would suspect it doesn’t matter apart from potential clearance as the diameter varies.

It will be balanced either way round, plus capable of transmitting torque either way around. Why, in any technical sense does it matter?

Just for fun and knowledge.

I can see that with a used shaft there will be wear on the splines and it probably wouldn't be good to reverse the rotation.

This ^ inc sliding joint now capable of picking up more debri from the road (before it was shielded) and UJ's now running under load in one direction for years now inverted not ideal IMO like I say keep slip-joint @ gearbox end

Hi, these things can be tricky to be categorical. I agree ideally as original. But, worn splines may work better if reversed, nice new flat surfaces to push on…. Plus, for debris, best for the cavity (as opposed to male spline) to be facing opposite of road direction to minimise any road splash entering. Better sealed though..

Just making the point that engineering is a nuanced and complex subject.

Best

Thanks for your input, aware that the orientation doesn't necessarily make a difference, but might as well make it factory while we're at it.
