Central knob removal (oo-err)

I think mine is to the front of the car, but you can't see it, you have to feel carefully around. Happy huntin'
What are you trying to do? Tighten something up? Maybe there's another way 'in'.
... or are you just keen to take it out and polish it
POlished everything else...
No, I want to check all the cabling under the central console cover and I cannot find the f***ing socket! This is the nth time of trying over the last couple of years (I go through these sad bouts, you see ) so I'm getting a tad frustrated...
Manek - you don't need to take the knob off to lift off the centre console. The gaiter slips over the knob (unlike the gearstick gaiter). I took my console off the other week - two big self tappers under the little tray at the back, two small ones either side at the front (into the carpet). Ideally the handbrake needs to be vertical - I took the h/brake grip off and just eased the gaiter over the button - just. Careful with the window switches and all the wires under there. The door knob should now be naked and the set screw visible.
I'm fishing around under the central console too. The cables coming out of the door knob run through the console and are stopping me taking it out of the car. If the knob is removed, does that give enough clearance to pass the rest of the mechanism through the channel in the console, or do I have to bite the bullet and slacken off the cables to the door latches?
Sounds like there are (at least) 2 designs. The door knob cables on mine run through a tunnel in the central console to the rear parcel shelf.
Got the console off today. Had to detach the cables in the door catch mechanism so I could pull the inner wire out from where its attached to the knob. Each wire is about two metres long and (luckily) can easily be fed back down its sheath to reappear in the door catch when you're reassembling things.
It's a pretty silly design. There is sod all reason to feed the cables through the tunnel. They could just as easily run along the top of the transmission tunnel. That would mean you'd only need to remove the door knob and the four screws on the console to remove the console, rather than having to fanny about with the door knob mounting plate too.

Just to 'file this away'
Centre console removal on early 94 chimp:
Single screw only under tray.
Door Knob is released/tightened by large locking nut.
To Release console either:
- release handbrake lever, or
- 4 nuts hold yoke (which clamps leather to console) Front / side / fore / aft, 10mm on mine. This yoke has prongs which push into transmission tunnel (thus releasing it negates need to slide back).
Hope this makes sense (and helps someone)
Cheers, Dave
